USA & Australia Direct were both great. I preferred them as they were not studio based. They took the programme to the people Direct. Another Programme that i think has now gone is Simpsons World. This really was good as John Simpson is a very good & talented journalist.

Anyone still got the "Now O'Clock News Promo"? That really was and quite possibly still is the best BBC News 24 advert i've ever seen. The audio is brilliant.

It's just a shame that he's all too well aware of it.

Other early day News 24 programmes included USA Direct, Science Review, Australia Direct & Face In The Crowd. USA Direct i think was a 5 day a week programme at one point presented mainly by Brian Barron and/or Jane Hughes from New York.

USA Direct was originally live from Washington or live or as-live from New York (changed daily), but then moved to a pre-recorded 3 chunk format from New York (the middle chunk was business from a separate studio)

Brian Barron presented from New York, with Bill Turnbull originally presenting from Washington ISTR, until the show moved to NY 5 days a week.

Like Europe Direct, USA Direct went from being daily to weekly AIUI, and was then joined by Australia Direct (and I think a few "Directs")

Science Review was weekends & Face In The Crowd was all over the place. Science review was similar in ways to what Click now does but obviously it was much lower budget and not quite as informative.

Yep - though Science Review was more science rather than technology. It was produced by the same team who produced the weekday morning science slots I believe - who were at one point a spin off from the BBC Science dept (i.e. Tomorrows World and Horizon) working with BBC News?

Face in the Crowd was a launch show ISTR - it concentrated on telling the stories of normal people caught up in news events at greater length, from a human angle.

7 Days is an early programme too. Initially presented in a very identical way to Reporters although it then just became text and VT'S when it got shortened to 15 mins to fit in with Agenda, It's Your Money etc and then axed all together.

There were a number of "7 Days" shows - two distinct versions.

As part of the Sunday 0900-1200 strand presented by Peter Allen and Jane Hill there was "Seven Days in Seven Minutes", but there was also a BBC World sister show to Reporters called "Seven Days", and this was also shown.

AIUI the final version of "Seven Days" was a BBC News 24 (not World) production and it was more closely related to "Seven Days in Seven Minutes"?

Yep - though ISTR Australia Direct wasn't a launch show?

USA Direct was almost always studio based when it was 5 days a week - which was for at least 2 years - if not a lot longer. It only left the studio when it went from daily to weekly. (Occasionally shows would be anchored from location - but it was usually from the BBC NY studio in Broadway - which closed when USA Direct stopped being daily)
