New Zealand Terror Attacks

There appears to be a major terrorist attack in Christchurch, it appears to be right wing extremists. Does anyone know when this broke?

I can scroll backwards on the news websites as well as anybody can, seemed to happen around 02:00 hrs GMT

I was staying up overnight and watching the BBC WN overnight simulcast. The news first broke at around 0245 via the BBC News app and the NC/WN simulcast began breaking coverage at the 0300 TOTH.

One assumes that the main channels in New Zealand have been rolling since it broke early afternoon their time.

Death toll up to 49 now -- completely out of character for our small country, where you can still catch regional flights without going through any security checks.

TV news here (1 News and Newshub) has been on rolling coverage since around 3pm when the real nature of the event became apparent. From looking briefly online, it seems like intl' outlets are dipping into either one of these two get live shots from the PM, police commissioner, etc.



Reporters from 1 News / TVNZ also seem to have been doing live spots for Al Jazeera, ABC News (Australia) with updates.

I heard your PM say that turbo-prop flights in NZ have been suspended, but not jet ones ? Presumably that's the reason ?

Yes and it's not some kind of loophole -- there have been knife attack hijackings on turboprops before, but there's never been loud calls to introduce more strict checks on these flights. That's the kind of culture you're seeing being rocked right now by this.

GMB this morning had TV3's NewsHub Emma Cropper reporting live from one of the hospitals in Christchurch.

Was walking through Hagley park just by the mosque about 15hours before all of this happened, so unreal how quick things can change an ordinary autumn day everyone going about their daily lives then New Zealand’s darkest day. I’ve been glued to the tv for the past 7 hours.

Did she whisper to him why she was there?? .. Change of sub?
