Nice water-cooled, projectors, bounced off mirrors and seamlessly blended to create the "Media band".

Thanks for the explanation, noggin. My German is rather rusty!

It's amazing how far back-projection seems to have come. That 'media band' certainly has a higher quality image than anything else I've seen: the ability to integrate what looks like 4 (or 5) separate projectors without any visible join between images looks very successful on screen.

The set as a whole does make me think of the bridge of the Enterprise in the latest Star Trek films. Very Happy

If you think back to the final BBC Sport studio at TVC, that used similar seamless stitching technology to use multiple (front in this case) projectors to create a single, seamless screen. Eurovision in Malmö also used similar stitching tech.

I would disagree.

Really don't see what you're all so impressed by. It's nothing special at all and what's the point in having a set which supposedly looks so great when 95% of the show is just a fixed shot which could easily be done CSO (is that because it's a weekend bulletin?) I find it really cold and soleless - quite detached from both the news and the viewers.

I can't really compare to other stations in Germany or what has gone before as I'm completely unfamilar with broadcast news in that country, but from an outsider looking in I just don't think it works at all.

I agree. And I disagree Wink

I think we need to wait until after Easter (when news production is usually simpler and scaled back) before we pass judgement, but ARD historically is incredibly conservative with their production, so it will be interesting to see how they use the new studio.

On the other hand, it may avoid some of the OTT-ness that other news broadcasters are guilty of.

Always worth remembering "Just because you can, doesn't mean you should"...

Yes, I'd forgotten the old BBC Sport set in TC5.

Having watched that ARD video again, I can see that there are actually 7 projectors.

12pm Edition of Tagesschau just started with Suzanne Holst, with an different shot and same announcer like on 8pm main edition.

I'm curious as to how the projection system works, for there is a quite visible parallax effect of the world map in the above videos (which is far more subtle in the Taggesschau opening). Is there 3D tracking involved?

Don't think it is anything clever to do with the actual projection, but something quite neat generating the video that feeds them.

They are using robotic cameras on arms (which appear to be hanging from the ceiling rather than floor mounted) - so presumably can generate full motion tracking data, they know the position of the screens and so can live render a screen in-fill with decent 3D effects that work on the tracking camera to simulate parallax on-camera? Very neat and subtle if they have - again streets ahead of the Heute VR car-crash.

They have demo-ed augmented reality - with 3D keyed foreground elements tracking camera movement - so they presumably have the technology to do this.

Could be a Viz system (wouldn't be a surprise given that they are running Mosart - who worked closely with Viz until they were bought by them. And they were both created by TV2 in Bergen originally)

Or they could just pre-render some video that works nicely with a pre-programmed move.

Or it might just be some nice design that just works on both static and moving shots to give the map a bit of 'life'.

Here is a 13-minute mini-documentary on the new look, bits and pieces of which have been seen in various ARD reports:

I know I don't post here anymore but I have to say I adore this woman's outfit. More of this on UK news please.

Just had chance to catch up with all this and it's all a bit odd.

The studio looks nice enough, but the intro and outro to the programme always has a really long, awkward camera move where the presenter is just sort of stood there not knowing where to look. It's such an odd design choice.

Also, we're a few weeks into the new look and I haven't seen Tagesschau do anything other than read the news from behind the desk on a static MCU, just like they always did in their old studio. It appears that some of the other programmes have been a little more creative however.

I'm not a big fan of the new theme tune, it's all a bit drawn out and slow.
