(I thought a new thread was appropriate for a New Pope)
What plans do the broadcasters have for coverage of the Conclave, I know it's a secret gathering but will we see regular coverage of the smoke signals from The Sistine Chapel?
I suppose that as soon as the white smoke emerges that all the News Channels will break into their coverage but will the Major Channels break in for the announcement?
Do we have anyone with details of the network's intentions, here?
I doubt that there will be a huge emphasis placed on the smoke as when the new Pope is selected, the bells of St Peter's will be rung. This is to avoid the potential confusion of greyish smoke being produced.
The basic fact is that the white smoke/bells won't tell you who the new Pope is (that's the real story), but just that they've reached a decision.
Given our own more important election, I don't think we'll get much coverage until the bells toll. That'll interupt coverage of our election as breaking news...the news channels then have about 30 minutes to prepare their shots of the balcony for the unveiling of the new Pope.
I don't believe you can get EWTN on SKY or NTL in the UK, but I've been following their coverage on NTL in Dublin. For such a small station, they must concider the last few weeks broadcasting as their oscars. They deployed a news team, broadcasting from a vantage point overlook st. peters. As you can imagine it's been non-stop coverage and opinion. Today they've been rolling with some very realistic CG showing how the secret vote will be made. You can stream via their website, but this is one channel which doesn't get alot of attention when I really should!
