New Newsnight Studio

Move to 54D from 5th October

Bringing this discussion out into the open from the depths of the Newsnight thread, but Newsnight moves tonight from Studio E into the BBC Persian studio, 54D. A couple of caps have been posted.

Will be the shows 4th studio in a year after the temporary move into 34D for the election and then moving from B to E back in March as Studio B was mothballed. No word yet on whether the BBC has some pink sofas for sale.
Turns out nobody had 2020 vision.

Nice spin of the studio to open things up. Purple sofa too.

Now. That does look nice. I love the big screen and the soft area looks really nicely done. From the angles we've seen so far the desk area looks slightly cramped but never that's just the angle.

It looks similar to B but on a smaller scale especially height wise. A number of presentation areas though - desk, sofa and plasma.

Ok, clearly those 2 Twitter photos were not a good preview. I love the set, it looks really nice and is a perfect home for Newsnight. The real view from the windows is a nice touch. It's quite cosy.

From what has been seen in the intro it seems a nicer studio than any of those currently used by the rest of the English language output which would also be beneficial to various other parts of the English language output (especially afternoon live and talking business if they ever return), although I realise it remains a Persian language studio predominantly. I would also consider this studio completely appropriate for programmes like Marr that don't really work in E.

Down the line interviews looking a bit awkward with the screen being behind her.

Any reason why down the lines couldn't be done on the big screen with Emily stood up?
I imagine Newsnight hasn't had the usual pilot times before moving into a new studio so hopefully they'll experiment with different options as the days (and weeks) go on to find what works best on air.

Amazing that they’ve been keeping this studio with a real window view a secret all these years, it seems too good just to be used for a foreign language news service

There are many an English region that would kill for a studio like this

We don't know how much time they've had to rehearse lines etc. They might tweak things as they go along.

Yes, no doubt that as with all studio moves things will evolve over the first few days and weeks. Only negative really is I don't think the desk area is big enough for any round table discussions should we get to that point - and unless they can move the anchors chair to face the video wall it wouldn't really work for down the line discussions with multiple contributors. Other than that though it is certainly preferable to 34D.
