Shame Carl Tyler retired, he was good. In the south edition we usually have Gemma Humphries not in the studio, or Martyn Davies in the studio although he is moving more to ITV National Weather now. Sad Which I cannot stand because of the Powergen adverts.

Carl seems to get mentioned by Fred, Debbie and Martin at least once a week! It's very strange that they never invite Gemma into the studio - surely it would be beneficial to help viewers to build up a connection with her?

I always thought it was because Gemma was the South East's weather forecaster, before the two forecasters started rotating and doing forecasts for all three sub-regions. I'm not sure but maybe Gemma appears in the South East studio when she is doing the weather?

Possibly... but surely they should "rotate" every few days so that everybody gets to see them?

The OLD reason for Gemma not appearing in the south studio was because she used to do all the weather from New Hythe.

What the situation is now they've moved, I don't know.

Gemma used to appear in the SE studio before the February rebranding. She is now 'behind the screen' so to speak Cool

I'm sure that Gemma made a one-off appearance in the South studio at some point last year - could be wrong, though.

Note the recent additions to the Meridian section on The TV Room: a higher-resolution copy of the titles from the first ever Meridian Tonight on 01/01/1993 that are also available from TV Ark (the TV Ark version, though smaller, does have a fantastic, crystal-clear example of the 1993 ident attached to the front of it). There are also a few screengrabs from the programme itself that aren't on TV Ark.

Anorak Time (I need my daily fix of recorded facts):
Do any of you remember in what year the 1993 idents were replaced with the textured purple ones, in what year those were replaced with the final orange one, and in what years Meridian News relaunched for the first and second times?

I think Gemma appeared outside the Southampton studios (with Martin, both under an umbrella) on the day her and Martin took over the weather presenting duties.

The other TV Room captures aren't from the same edition as the titles I think (I'm sure Carl didn't sit at the desk on the first edition), so that'll be why.

That was back in 2002 when Carl left, wasn't it? Or am I getting my dates muddled up?

Good Photo of Fred on the in the New Studio on the New Meridian Tonight Set in the Book.

Presumably it's similar to London Tonight and Central News West - but what's the backdrop?

Yep same set. The backdrop is using the same background as the current set does, only on the projection screen.

Is it a projection screen? I haven't seen anything there other than the standard backdrop - which looks more like a PBU or a Duratrans fixed logo in a frame.

They may have saved money - and a lot of studio space - by using a piece of cardboard rather than a projector behind the presenters? (Maybe one studio has a projector and the other two don't?)
