Eeek - cheap studio install by the look of it. The cameras are on cheap Pro-Peds rather than decent studio peds... Suppose they are unlikely to do anything interesting that would require a decent ped...

As for the sofa - is it me or does it look a bit snug - with the presenters a bit close to the edges - something doesn't look quite right. It all looks a bit small compared to the London Tonight version.

Out of interest are the three studios and galleries all in a row ? Does anyone know if they can do clever things like re-patch the studios into different galleries etc. (Might be useful for pan regional stuff)

Are there DEFINATLY 3 studios? Has anybody seen them together??

Given the technology involed, I find it odd that they did not build the new kit into Maidstone...as one live show from Whitey need the same staff as one from Maidstone? Of course, If the sub-regions were pre-recorded at any point....1 set of staff....

Or am I being to cynical?

Not bad at all... even though it is a cheap ripoff of the London Studio. Bit too small for my liking though.

Hmmm... I spotted this last night and put it down to human error but feel obliged to point out that:

Two nights in a row, the SE edition of Meridian Tonight has used the South version of the titles in the final sting following the headlines at 6.

The area highlighted is Hampshire and surrounding region, not the south-east!

Isn't it ironic... don't you think??

During the Meridian update at 6:50 on the Evening News, there was no headline music and after Fred had finished speaking he said something like "Brilliant Mica" and the camera cut back to him and he was fiddling around under the desk...

Well if the Meridian Newbury, Southampton and New Hythe studios shows are all coming (or going to come from) Whiteley live and simultaneously they will need three studios and three galleries surely!

(Anglia have had two news studios and galleries in Norwich since About Anglia was replaced by Anglia News East and West in the early 90s)

I know what you mean, but it might just be the difference in camera angles. The 'guest' benches certainly look a bit shorter than the London ones. Here's a comparison:

Part of the problem is that it looks as if the Meridian studio is smaller than the London Tonight one, and the camera is shooting the wide shot from a higher angle, but physically closer.

Much nastier shot, and it makes it look a lot more cramped.

Why isnt Centrals desk lit nicely like those? Theirs is dull and grey for some reason, and havnt got the yellow lights behind the plasma.

That gallery shot is depressing - it looks like they have given up on a decent quality monitor stack and shoved a few plasmas in fed with mult-screen devices.

They aren't full TV resolution, and have very poor lip-sync. They have the advantage that they are cheaper, need less power, and less space.

This really does look like a quick, cheap and nasty installation. Quality seems to have flown out of the window.

Comparing the new Meridian studios and sets with the replacements I have seen so far it is really depressing. They've gone from a clean, spacious and professional studio environment to a broom cupboard built and equipped on the cheap... Not exactly a great commitment to quality regional news.

Yes, noggin, VERY LNN.

Although I think you still get banned from Kent House for twenty-five years if you mention the LNN plasmas in public.

Hey, it'll be two years on the 18th of February; only about twenty-three more to go!

Similar happened in the South-East - Cut started but nervous Phil Hornby missed his cue, so we saw him just sitting there looking at the camera, shuffling papers - when he started to read the headlines, it was too late. My mum went "oh bless him" Laughing

I think there are still some timing issues to be sorted out.

On Monday's south edition, Fred handed to London for the national teaser and we got about ten seconds of the idiotic London pair stomping about and twiddling their thumbs, waiting to be told to start, before they finally launched into the national headlines.

Whitely must have recorded the WHOLE feed and not trimmed the front bit off before transmission.

And they burn in easily. The idea is that they are configurable - you can have lots of small screens or big and small, but after a while the white lines and TCRs burn in so badly that you can't see anything if you move round the pictures
