I see www.itn.co.uk homepage has been fixed. It looks so much better.

I am not sure how ITV News is transmitted on analogue - I guess 14:9 letterbox. !

It's 4:3 on analogue. It's also 4:3 on stv on digital (the only regions that don't crop ITV News on digital).

In that case surely there is effectively no safe area as such? If it's full frame 4:3 on analogue and cropped 14:9 on digital, then the left and right edges of the frame are the same in both cases, aren't they?

not if you are outputting to 4:3 from your digibox in which case you're lopping off every side of the image

Whatever the technical specifications of "safe areas" may be, our lounge TV is set to 4:3 centre cut out and you can see everything fine, so it's not a problem in practice!

I just can't help thinking that this

would be a whole lot better

That just looks like the poor compromise you get after a rebrand is watered down due to complaints!

As I said before, it doesn't look good on ITV, but it really works with Channel 4 News - the endcap is pretty seemlessly linked to the credits.

And TV is becoming less important to ITN - the brand looks a whole lot better in the online bulletins - and seems to be designed with mobiles in mind too!

It reminds me of one of the old ITN logos. I'm sure it was very similar to that (bolder).

This one by any chance Antz?

That's the one. I thought I'd seen it before. Even that looks better than the current crap on air at the moment.

Are there rules against advertising on endboards? Maybe thats why the slogan has gone.

No - it just goes on the 6.30 because that's RTS News Programme of the Year, as a self-promotion.

Yay! Maybe someone heard me Twisted Evil

I didn't want to p|ss on ITN's parade, but if the most PSB-related part that's left of the 'old' ITV can't 'lead the way' in being - erm, well, - INDEPENDENT, it's a pretty poor example to be showing the rest of its industry.

Quite frankly, I would have felt better if ITN had launched a totally DIFFERENT new logo, rather than just apply nasty tweaks to the one that has served them well for 35 years.

Even the 1992-94 version was better. Good design doesn't have to be avant garde to be modern any more. In fact, it was a very mid-80s thing, which although TV didn't really take to in corporate branding, programme graphics did (more so on C4, admittedly). Today it just looks old hat - like retro, except good retro design harks back to classic, timeless old design themes, rather than tired, badly dated, ineffective and just plain poor looking design themes that belong squarely in the box of "history - best left there".

Nope, the slogan wasn't on the 10:30 endboard either. They must have scrapped it altogether.
