Does anyone remember when they introduced the current titles that they actually had an entirely new vamp and title music (was kinda acousticy and quite sombre in a way) which remained for two days before they reverted back to the old one!?!?

Yes I also agree, the current ones have been going for a while now and they need to be replaced with something fresh
I also hope GMTV will change that ancient backdrop to something live

GMTV can't change to something live easily because they are in a window-less studio.

CSO would be the obvious option.

CSO (or chromakey as it's also known) would not be an obvious option at all. CSO is good when you have a static single shot that requires a fixed background. With a regular chromakey, the background cannot move with the camera. There are many varying and moving shots on GMTV that would simply make CSO a non-option. It is possible to programme a separate background for each camera shot, but again, these have to be fixed shot positions - hardly conducive for a magazine/news programme.

And that's without even talking about how CSO rarely looks realistic anyway. Why bother with all that hassle when you can just light a flat?

They could also use something similar to ITV News and have a background that changes with the subject they are discussing if they were THAT desperate to change the background to live! But it's very unlikely of course.

You're right, it is very unlikely. Mainly because the gear that ITV News uses costs serious amounts of money.

BBC Spotlight have a CSO background for their window on the world. OK, fair enough, it doesn't look perfect when the camera pans down at the start of the programme. But it works.

I say it would be the obvious option, but I mean the cheapest. if GMTV were prepared to spend a lot more money, they could probably find a better way, but I would have thought CSO would have been easiest.

Surely lighting a decent flat is the easiest option (and probably the cheapest)? You can move the camera around, not worry about keeping the shot absolutely still during an interview (what happens when someone leans out of shot?) and you don't have to programme many different backgrounds for all the possible shots you could have against the background. CSO also gives no sense of depth of field, so everything looks very flat and in sharp focus - not ideal for pleasing images, particularly in interviews.

Yep - and even with VR camera tracking techniques (which allow the background to move with the cameras) - you stil have the limitations of CSO when it comes to lighting, guests clothing, and also the fact that it looks flat and fake.
