I think fanoftv is just saying perhaps it would be better than Showbiz News updates.
Personally I think Showbiz News is fine on ITV2, but for ITV4 having a sports news update would seem more appropriate.
That is what I meant, apologies for any confusion. I personally would prefer news updates instead of just Showbiz packages.

Showbiz updates are cheaper to produce as they only pre-record one bulletin a day for the digital channels
I do however understand that they are cheaper, what I don't understand is why they bother to do them at all.
I don't mind the showbiz updates, in fact I'd like to see a return of Liquid News, or for ITV2 to do a tie up with Heat to produce a daily programme. Would current limitations allow for say a heat world.com programme to tie a showbiz news programme to their website?
As I've taken this off the thread a bit, how much would it cost, if anyone has an idea for Five News to have more regular updates, especially as they are provided by Sky News.
And just as a general opinion poll, now that Sky News have produced Five News for a few years, do people prefer it to when it was produced by ITN?

Well when Popworld started that was tied in with Popworld.com - but I don't know if C4 had any stake in that.

Say what you like about the quality, but I think it stands out a bit more now in comparison to other News programmes than how it used to be during the last few years at ITN. The first couple of years of Five they tried to be different and in a way they did succed, but the ratings didn't really reflect that, the bulletins were shifted, for instance since 1997 the main half hour bulletin has been on at 8.30pm, 7.00pm, 6.00pm, 5.30pm and now 5.00pm. During the last few years at ITN it just felt like a half arsed basic News service IMO.
Although for alot of people Five isn't the first place people go to for the main News, that would belong to the BBC or Sky. Five is just there to provide an alternative, which it does well at on weekday afternoons, but for the Weekends I don't think it's a great loss. Five's never had much of a weekend impact, 5 minutes is probably enough.
Although they sneak in Sunrise very quietly on a Saturday at 6.00am, I felt that had more impact on Weekdays, even when it was only on for 30 minutes.

OK, here goes. My understanding is that it is done in order to get around minutage rules so that they can squeeze an extra commercial break into a movie without breaking advertising rules.
Films have different minutage rules to other genres. They are only allowed one centre break for every half hour of the scheduled duration. A drama, for example, would be allowed 3 centre breaks in a scheduled 60 minute slot compared to 2 centre breaks in a movie scheduled for 60 minutes.
So in a schedule consisting of two 60 minute programmes there would be 6 centre breaks + 2 end breaks. A 2 hour movie broadcasting in the same slot could only have 4 centre breaks + 1 end break. However, if they schedule a news bulleting in the middle they can insert an extra end break in the middle of the movie, making a total of 4 centre breaks plus 2 end breaks (1 in the middle of the film).
Example
8pm Gadget Show
9pm Minder
Ad breaks could be as follows:
8:15, 8:30, 8:45, 9PM EB, 9:15, 9:30, 9:45, 10PM EB
8pm – 10pm Movie (without news interruption)
Ad rules would mean the breaks should be:
8.15, 8.45, 9.15, 9.45, 10PM EB
This would apply to the way Five, ITV digital channels and other multi-channels that insert “news” schedule films.
It can get slightly more complicated when you look at the way ITV schedules films on ITV1, but I have gone on along enough now!
I’m no expert but that’s my interpretation of it, happy to be corrected.

Interesting. But are the showbiz updates part of the schedule or just aired at the end of a break, and if not would this ruling still be the case.
So this is most probably the reason that ITV1 airs the news in the middle of a film, even though they most probably use the majority of their advertising time during the earlier or later prime time shows.

ITV1 is slightly more complicated as they schedule longer news bulletins in the middle of the film. This could be for at least two reasons that I can think of.
1. As its normally at least a scheduled 15 minute bulletin - if they chose to they could get a further addittional eb into the schedule for the news itself.
2. Use the news to get around daypart issues concerning average minutage between 6pm -11pm - this would take even longer to explain!
That does seem to be the case, and is the reason ITV1 probably do it as well - but you'd think OFCOM (then again, on second thoughts perhaps not) would have some stipulation to prevent them using the loophole. It's a bit daft really when if they put an extra 10 seconds of ads into a film they'd get fined, but they're allowed to put even a 30-minute bulletin in the programme and in addition benefit from extra minutes too.
Not too surprising as his name was mentioned a couple of weeks ago, but interesting (not surprising) that Five are dropping the lunchtime News, and I can't see Matthew hosting both The Wright Stuff and the new "Five & Friends" programme.
That report explains why Alex Thomas hasnt been about for a while, and why Sky News Sports presenters have been making appearances, though they are being called 'Sports Journalists' whenever they are on five
The lunchtime bulletin going is a shame but with with the axing of Trisha five are investing very little in the daytime schedule so viewing figures will likely become smaller
Anyone know what will be hapenning with Asha. She did quite a few weekend bulletins but do the new arrangements mean she wil return to just reporting?
