The weekend main bulletins have been reduced to five minutes.

Is that the only bulletin of the day now too? Surely it wouldn't be too difficult to repackage one of Sky News's 15-minute bulletins as Five News - or perhaps even just air it as Sky News on Five.

Actually there is a theory - would rebranding the whole service as "Sky News on Five" perhaps give Five News a bit of extra credibility, or would it just have the opposite effect.

But then you'd only have to revamp the news anyway because the two are so differently stylistically

Credibility and Five News , three words that rarely go together nowadays.
Personally speaking the lower the profile of the news supplier is for me, then the better it is. However the more desperate it becomes at Five then this might be the only option. That's if sky have the facilities to produce a pre recorded bulletin.

Now Natasha is back Matt will become under used like Kate and Helen.

I guess Matt will go back to doing some reporting. I have seen Kate doing some wildlife programmes on 5 so she does have something else to use while Helen is often on Sky (though not at the moment since she is covering the lunchtime news). Having said that its a shame Helen doesnt do the the 5pm very often

Cant say I like it but the idea seems to be to focus just on weekday early evenings when there is usually the biggest audience

On Saturdays yes, though has there ever been more than 1 Saturday bulletin. On Sundays the lunchtime bulletin has been gone a while now but there is usually at least one evening update after the main bulletin (though will things change now?)

Well it must have some credibility since it had a number of RTS nominations and viewing figures are increasing. Some people obviously like it

Tonights bulletin was presented by Phil Lavelle. Think I saw him on Sky's Sunrise as the headline reader once last year. He said he will be back tomorrow too

As a five minute bulletin it was comprehensive, with one report (probably a Sky one) and all the days headlines covered. No weather forecast, just a map at the end.

It looks like Lara Lewington has already left if her website is to be believed.

If this 6.30pm hour long edition goes ahead perhaps Matt and Isla will end up co-hosting, with Natasha sticking with the 5pm bulletin.

What annoys me with Five News is how they've ditched the updates most nights, but if there is a film they'll stick one in the middle - even though it wouldn't be there if it was two separate programmes. ITV2/3/4 do the same too.

When you look back at Channel 5 in 1997 when they had updates throughout the day, and the only time that they wouldn't air them was in the movie. I was looking at launch promos, and the launch programme on youtube, and it's amazing how it's changed. I still look at the original schedule thinking that there were good ideas, such as the news at 8:30.

You'd have thought that with Five News now run by Sky that (maybe for slight additional funding that they could provide the updates in the same way that the old 5 News did, even if they were done in the Sky Newsroom, in a way that would hark back to the original too.

As for the showbiz news, I don't understand why they don't just do ITV News updates on ITV 2, 3 & 4 rather than the showbiz news.

Why would we want News on ITV2,3,4? Some people want to get away from it sometime you know.

I think fanoftv is just saying perhaps it would be better than Showbiz News updates.

Personally I think Showbiz News is fine on ITV2, but for ITV4 having a sports news update would seem more appropriate.

I believe it's to do with ad minuteage rules. Films have different rules regarding ad minuteage (i.e less breaks), but if a film is split by the news they are entitled to more ad breaks.
