Wouldn't surprise me if they're now just trying to make the 7pm bulletin as bad as possible so they can use the low ratings to plead to OFCOM for it to be axed.

Except supposedly they're doing it because of fairly bad ratings - surely if this was the case they'd just let it die!

Is it me or has all this 'new' Five News stuff been thanks to the BBC using Natasha Kaplinsky on that 8pm trial - since that she's joined Five and the content is clearly aimed at a similar audience.

In relation to the whole comparison to the One show thing, bare in mind the one show isn't trying to be a news show! It's a topical and lively 'show' with some news stories (handled very lightly) on a primetime television slot (BBC 1 at 7pm must help with ratings). Five News doesn't seem to be trying to copy that market, but a newsround-based show aimed at young men - they just seem to have forgotten that whole 'news' thingy Rolling Eyes

Interesting to note as well they've gone for the glamorous Isla rather than Matt, and personally I would of thought men would rather have a program aimed at men (so about sport, gadgets etc.) would take it better from a man (in the same way some men can't stand women supporting football) but clearly they've gone for the eye-candy Rolling Eyes

Like said, it will be interesting to see what Natasha ends up doing when she returns. Note they've not really lost any viewers since her maternity leave started, so will they really be able to justify her high pay cheque? Lets wait and see...

Depending on her contract [whether its with five or BSkyB] its possible we may see her back on Sky News.

Now that would be interesting! I could see her being given a Kay Burley-style 3 hour shift somewhere...

Also worth pointing out that:

Arrow They've (for obvious reasons) dropped the '...with Natasha Kaplinsky' brand, and
Arrow They had (briefly) changed the picture at the top of the Five News website from Natasha to Isla and Matt.

it'll be interesting to see how long natasha has off. will she take the full 6mths or, will she get back fairly soonish to get her role back so she can have some control over any possible changes - also, her husband's a city banker so that maybe another mitigating factor in a sooner rather than later return - after all she's on nil pay at the mo so £30k per month is not to be sniffed at.

How do you know she is on nil pay? Have you seen her contract of employment or been rummaging through her bin for bank statements?

All the newspapers were reporting that because she is a freelancer she only gets paid for when she works - and freelancers don't receive maternity rights legally remember!

I bet you all the tea in China, on the super-duper megabucks contract she's on, she'll definitely be getting maternity pay.

My thoughts exactly, Bob. There will be clauses for illness and maternity leave; either that or she needs a new agent to negotiate her contracts.
