I'm shocked that they have those sports bits as the coverage of sport on LT in general is poor unless a London side is in a Champions League match that ITV1 is covering.

The likes of Central have a sports correspondent, so why not London?

Didn't they use too - Jonathan someone?

Granada and Wales also have sport correspondents in the studio most days, so London definitely should. They could do London Tonight and then do the sport later for the ITV News too.

yes they did until they sacked him! Probably too good for them.......

Jonathan Wills was his name. He was a regular sports reader for the ITV News at Ten Thirty, when it relaunched in 2004.

He was (rumours say paid off) asked to leave by ITN, alongside Harry Smith and Helen Wright.

Tyne Tees have 4 to 5 correspondents for sport, who also read the sports desks on North East Tonight.

I find that as odd, simply as Granada Reports actually has a Daily Sports round-up, usually just after 6.15pm or so, which covers a fair amount of Sport including the Football. As Granada do it like this I would have thought this would be common in other ITV Regions, especially London.

London Tonight hasn't bothered with a proper sports section since the move to ITN. It played a prett big part in the programme before then, with Jonathan Wills, Jonny Gould et al having their own seating area.
I think they probably decided it didn't 'fit' with the more consumer/entertainment direction it's gone in since then.

Alot of ITV Regional News programmes have gone that way, but yet I find it surprising LT doesn't do it, it's not as if there's any Sport worth covering, London has loads, even in just the Football.

Saying that I caught the opening to LT earlier although Alastair Stewart and Katie Derham are excellent presenters, I just don't like their presenting style on LT, especially giving an opinion to the story, whereas most Newsreaders/Journalists don't do so, no matter what the story is.

I find A and K too relaxed and giggly on LT where as pre ITN the format was more serious. A shame as the presenters work better on the national.

Sport is now a poor 3rd place to showbiz and the awful property section which if I was really interested, I'd pay 50p for the Standard instead.

BBC London News have decent sports coverage even if they only bring out Mark Bright on a Friday and use news reporters to cover sports stories.

Living in Granadaland, I find it rather odd that you don't get proper sports news in London. As already mentioned, we always have a daily sports round-up during Granada Reports at 1800 with a sports presenter and we also get the notable sports stories mentioned during other Granada News bulletins (albeit read by the newsreader instead). BBC North West Tonight is also good at covering sports news, with dedicated sports presenter, Tony Livesey. That London of all places doesn't have such a setup I find rather surprising.

Has London Tonight bothered with a proper anything since it ceased to be LNN and became ITN produced?

It now seems to come from a generic and character-less broom cupboard (well you wouldn't want Meridian to get jealous...), which suits the content perfectly.

London Tonight used to be an upbeat, highly produced, quite tabloid - sure, bit crime and court heavy, but a pretty polished show with a distinctive studio and a decent presenter and reporter team. Then ITN took over...

If anything, it is surprising how little the reporter team has changed over the last decade or so.

On any given night you'll still see Simon Harris, Phil Bayles, Marcus Powell, Emma Walden, Liz Wickham, Ronke Phillips and other LNN stalwarts reporting for the programme.

Yes - accepted. I guess it is the editorial tone and presentation that really seems to have changed. The show always felt and looked pretty classy - it really just seems a bit cheap now.

The ex LNN reporters are still doing a good job with the serious stories, apart from that the random freelancers who pop up with the fluffier stories and if they're lucky, they may even get to do some work reporting on real issues!

I've noticed that the 1110 and 1355 bulletins are now presented by the national presenter who reads the headlines.

If only ITN kept the editorial policy of LNN and kept the showbiz and property stories to the Friday programme.
