I wonder if they'll just move the LT bench sofas into the ITV News set with a VR backdrop of the existing set, but then I can't see how they'll do that especially as the ITV News at 6.30 is straight afterwards.

Easy. They just have 2 sets in the studio, one at each end. Some cameras point at the national set and some at the London set. All that needs to happen at 6:30 is just to cut from one to the other and start the second programme.

It's similar to how Nationwide used to work in the 70's

Well technically London Tonight and ITV News do share studios for some bulletins at the moment. A little know fact is that say at lunchtimes or weekends when the presenter is the same as the presenter on the main network bulletin, the presenter stays exactly where he or she is, and the 'London Tonight' background is keyed behind them in a matter of seconds. Mike W is wrong - ITV Granada will be getting a new set when they move to Salford Quays so it could follow this. Although as it is all about cost ITV London may just use the main studios existing CSO capabilities.

Meridian has the newest set, although identical to their old one. The LT backdrop is from a camera set up at The London Studios to replicate the original LT studio backdrop during the LNN era.

I think the reason sharing a studio works at lunchtime is because London Today is just a short summary and therefore doesn’t require much rehearsal time (if any) nor a full studio set – they simply swap the national VR set for the live feed off the South Bank roof camera, which is done at the flick of a switch.

I’m not sure the same can be said for trying to present 2 separate half hour news bulletins from the same studio back-to-back. Presumably London would have to lose it’s physical set and move to VR as well, but what about rehearsal and set-up time for national (during which presenters are constantly having to talk to the gallery)? Surely that would not be possible while the regional bulletin is on air from the same studio?

As others have mentioned, the national bongs are already pre-recorded (as is the London weather), but
providing the order of programmes remains the same (ie: London first then network), my guess is that the regional weather will cease to be intergrated into the programme (that is to say the pre-recorded segment will no longer be introduced live from the studio sofa) but will go to air after London Tonight finishes … giving national a few extra valuable minutes before TX. Just a hunch.

I read they were just getting a newer, more upgraded version of the existing set - might have been on here or elsewhere, by new set I was talking about a completely new and different design!

Must be said they're so tired these current sets - please tell me they're ditching the yellow soon...

In some ways, it's surprising that it's taken eight years since ITN took over the London contract from LNN for this sort of integration to happen

Is this going to put the LT set into the virtual studio, or is it going to be a whole ITV News revamp?

Well later this year a new set is coming to ITV Central and ITV Granada, so I imagine there'll be a new look made for ITV London to use in the national set.

An apology from me to all, I was wrong and gregmc is right, expect blue and lots of it in the new sets!

Is this new information you've found out today?

Wonder if this will lead to Granada getting a new style set when that moves next year?

Aside Coronation Street the rest of Granada is moving this year by the looks of it, but I'd be surprised if they took the current set with them, which by the looks of it I doubt they will.

Again as said I'm surprised they haven't done this sooner with ITV London, by the looks of it these plans sound similar to the recent ones put out by ITV safeguarding the future of Regional News for a few more years, with some bulletins being cut back and stories and reporters being shared by other regions, all London is doing here is sharing with the National team. If ITN was based at any other city that housed an ITV region then the same would have been done by now.

Presumably Granada Reports will be going HD (as will London Tonight and ITV News according to one of the articles) so I really can't see them using the current set because even in SD you can see it is falling apart and is scratched everywhere. It's 8 years old, and at the very least I would expect a new version of the current set, if not a completely new one. When it was first announced, one of the reporters for Granada was in the new studio and it had a window so it will be interesting to see if they will use that or not.

It shouldn't be that hard to convert the ITV News look into HD, but with the current look coming up for three years this could signal some wider changes. One of the reasons they may not have merged London Tonight and ITV News sooner could be that they were trying to move away from being London-centric and such a move wouldn't have helped, whilst they were aiming for a corporate look across their regional news programmes, which if there is any truth in the posts in this thread, could be something that is about to go. Also it could have caused some level of resentment from other regional shows about a percieved favouritism/higher standard by allowing the two teams to work so closely together instead of being standalone, but the new ITV London format is different to the rest of the UK regional news so it does seem like a good move to be making now.

Not necessarily.

Remember, during the first few years that ITV1 was yellow, ITV News was teal! After all, there's no reason why a channel and its news bulletins should automatically have the same colour scheme as each other.

ITV1 might either stay yellow, or become a colour that is neither yellow nor blue. We'll just have to wait and see.
