This is nonsense that needs slapping down. A lot of over 75s are amongst the wealthiest in society and of course should be paying the licence fee in the same way that they shouldn't have bus passes or access to the winter fuel allowance...

Well I disagree with what you say but I respect your view.

Why do you disagree?

I disagree over your analysis about the over 75's and the licence fee. Its not a question of financial concerns (admittedly I don't know many over 75's and am really not interested in their finances) its a case of psychology. Many over 75's are widows or have very few family around them so the license fee waiver and therefore not having to pay for tv in my opinion helps them feel less isolated.

My mother is an 89 year old widow, and only really has me as family. There is absolutely no correlation in her mind between the TV licence, and her situation. She simply shrugged her shoulders in an <alan partridge meets the BBC's new head of news and current afairs> way, and said it was only my inheritance that the charges would be eating into.

I'm not sure how you can say it's not a financial issue.

Those who can comfortably afford a license can pay for it if they want one, those who can't should be getting the means tested benefits that would entitle them to continue to receive a free one.
Write that down in your copybook now.

Point taken. I should have said it wasn't strictly a financial issue but the psychological aspect stands.

There's no doubt there are people akin to your example, but there are many like my mum who really don't give a monkey's either way

Indeed, and of course it's not age related per se

It doesn’t cover everyone I agree my parents don’t care either but I would wager there is a lot of people who have a different view.

Let us have some perspective here about the current licence fee. Now, I am no fan or supporter of the current licence fee set up, I would prefer a simple government grant funded BBC, in the same way PBS is funded in the states.

However, let us take the £157.50 per year licence fee, and break it down to the fact that it amounts to around £0.43 per day.

Now, 43p per day seems to be not too bad a value. Most people waste 43p easily in one day.

Maybe pensioners should look again at the figures, and see that it is not at all too expensive. Remember the UK Basic Pension stands at £134.25 per week . 43p per day, that averages around £3.01 a week, out of the basic pension.

Perspective.

Agreed

Those that put their 50inch telly on first thing in the morning, and leave it on until bedtime will be spending about 43p a day in electricity to run it.

I suspect those who moan the most about it are also those for which the cost really isn't an issue.
Turns out nobody had 2020 vision.

Those who moan about the licence fee are the ones who wish the BBC doesn't exist at all. Dan Wootton at Talk Radio admitted he wished to see the BBC gone, and no public funded broadcaster at all.

Well most reasonable folk would like Dan Wootton gone from the media landscape too.
Turns out nobody had 2020 vision.
