that's the moscow shot on the countdown steve posted a few pages back. That is my third favourite shot out of all of the countdowns, especially when the camera follows the streak and then seamlessly changes direction for the next shot. My second favourite being the night time view of TVC and my favourite being that ludicruously ott and fab bit where it zooms in and out of the BBC logo on the dish.

I originally thought what have they done when I saw the countdown but then again I've said the exact same thing with every presentation change ever since the change in the Breakfast set at the end of July, 2003. Now though, I think the countdown is great; it looks modern and the variation of the music, especially in the last ten seconds, is catchy and gives it more life than the old one.
I'm glad it's changed becuase I got sick of that tractor and the fish market with the watered down music. I remember once last summer just before 17.00, they showed a still of 90secs, obviously waiting for 16.58.30, which comprised of the fish market. It was on screen for five or six seconds, waiting, and then when it was about to start they switched to the headlines with Matthew Amroliwala yet you could hear the countdown music playing in the background. I emailed the BBC and it was 'a technical fault'.
I always thought with the previous countdowns it was almost impossible to get bored but these ... I'm not too sure - they're trying to tell little stories and I'm not sure if that's possible on a device such as a countdown.
(Page 6)
I always personally thought that the last lot was telling a story with the train arriving and leaving the station, the building being built, the tractor.
There's a link to one of the BBC ONE idents in there too.

Which countdown variation is Marksi indicating all though I'm guessing it will be earlier on, and I've got a feeling it may be linked with Tumbler.

OK, I was wrong: it's growing on me; slightly!
One other thing bugs me, though, and I know it's been mentioned before. There may be a simple answer, so 'scuse my ignorance if there is, but why are News 24 going for such short countdowns (and, for that matter, why did Sky News dump them altogether)?
The trailers instead are pointless and heavily repeated, so they're no better, and it's arguable that countdowns are an integral part of the channel: pacey. dynamic and brand-building.
Just a personal view; anyone any ideas?

I by no mean have access to the inner mind of BBC News but I would presume its had something to do with £££. How many times has the countdown been used for more than 60seconds? Very Few. Its simply a way of burning 30 or so secs.
I would agree the endless Jane Hill PRESS ME im red trailers should never have been broadcast. For christs sake Chris Eakin is clearly in the OLD news studio. Anyway I do hope BBC News 24 changes the approach to the top of the hour. The countdown is vastly improved and feels more intergrated with the headline image merging. N24 could do a channel 4, have the headling story and one other, then cue titles with images of the story in, then cut back and have the rest of the "headlines" done as a "coming up".
Also another point pres wise who controls which channel adopts which aspects. Basically because BBC World's pres seems so much more professional. I was watching World in Italy about a year ago and its looked and sounded so much better than News 24 version of things, such as the headline bed.
I do hope News 24 changes the TOTH soon.........

The 1pm's just been on, as no doubt many of you will have seen. As far as I can tell, it's the same as the 1am one, but with a 'daylight' TV Centre. Maybe they just swap the last 2-3s of light with dark for the night presentations?
Anyone got any screenies of countdown at 1pm to confirm my suspicions?

They are the same. With the alteration of TVC in Day/Nightime.

Well I like the music and the idea of the new countdown, but don't you think that those red flashes are a little old-fashioned? I mean, it seems the signature tune of a Japanese cartoon of the 80s. A little grotesque in my opinion.

I agree, it is excellent. He's used the pre-Dec. 2003 World bed. I think News 24 should use something similar to this, and bring the TOTH sequence back to basics, 30 seconds max of headlines over a fast-paced bed. This is what grabs a viewer's attention, and keeps them watching, not someone standing in front of a screen monotonously announcing a seemingly endless list of what's coming up in the next hour.
Stuff like that can be left until after the main story. A fast paced startup sequence would go with this countdown much better than what N24 are currently doing
Is it possible for Bail to upload the headline bed? or even the 'full' one, countdown+headlines+opening titles?
I love the .. 'fast pace' of BBC World's previous headlines bed.

Bail - Your remix of the N24 countdown past and present is excellent - the End Vamp that you added to it, is that an old 24 or World vamp or is it one you created yourself ?

I've noticed that during the overnight service News24 have still broadcast the old countdown.
