As a newbie, IMHO the new countdown soundtrack screams "impact". Those heavy drumbeats, though clichéd to some, will really draw in some people. It's really saying, "watch me, something fantastic will [or might] happen right here". I do hope that it was the work of David Lowe, because I think he's done loads for the credence of TV news music in the last few years.

It's a very important presentational asset, and the music rising to a crescendo just in time for the headlines clearly isn't an accident.....
But they're made long to act as a buffer up to the top of the hour - it's not easy to bring something as fluid as News24 to an exact close time (ie weather) every hour, so the titles bring flexibility. Trails come in 20", 30" and 60" lengths - so they're quite blunt tools.
The top of the hour template is for 2'30 weather, 2x trails (total 1'), then 30" of titles - so weather should start at 56' past the hour exactly. Trails are droppable, but it's frowned on. Taped weathers can't be squeezed, although the few live ones can. In extremis, a short weather (1') can run, but it makes the top of the hour very, very tight - and it's impossible if there's a presenter change. Most gallery producers would aim for between 20-30" of titles. Less that 10" is too little, more than 30" and it drags (to normal viewers, not TV pres freaks!). If you ever see an interview run on past 57'00, hold on tight - because it will be!

That's a point -- News24 could probably do if they really wanted to with a 15-sec countdown. Trails aren't that long, and could be used to buffer the news intro if they really wanted to. So they clearly consider it an important presentational asset.

Interesting stuff, w12!
Just caught it for the first time really onscreen and I'm quite impressed! Nice 44 second version just now and certainly better than the cobbled live-action, regional news titles bits and a decent enough theme of the red beams throughout. The top of the hour really needs to be dead on for the full screen beam effect to work well!
Great to see the countdown live on.

Asa, can you not just ban this ******? All I've seen from him so far is inappropriate, annoying and insensitive posts.

I think mixing out of that final second to the first server headline when the beam goes full screen would work quite well... probably wouldn't work if World were trying to get a clean opt in...!
