For me it was that stupid swimming pool shot. Followed up closely by that fish market and the tractor

How could I forget the Millennium ( ? ) Bridge in Gateshead as well... and that bloody oil tanker. The more I think about it, the happier I am to see the back of the old countdown set!

And the stock market traders have gone now too. Probably because they don't fit into the channel's target audence very well.

I just found the old version lazy. It was essentially all a rehash of Nationas and Regions titles.
There was
Midlands Todays
East Midlands Today
Look East
Points West
Spotlights
London
Look North (?)
and there only the ones I can remember.
The music was crap. The video was appaulingly lazy and the "info" box was.... well crap.....

And the bull being hurded in the ring, and that skateboarder... but the fish market and the tractor was the worst.

Are you sure? Quite a few of the shots have that superimposed red streak, and they all seem fairly "unique" in that they feature footage from behind cameras and are interestingly stylised. I'm almost certain that most of the footage was custom shot.

Yes, they are all custom shot..... but they wouldn't go out there and film just what was needed. They'd have filmed no more if they were all 60 seconds long.... they'd just use more of the rushes

There was a shot from North West Tonight's in the old Countdown, it was all of the cyclists going over the Bridge at Salford Quays in Manchester.

The old countdown was good, but the new one is far, far better. As some others in this thread have already said, it just shouts "this is BBC News, look at us, we're brilliant". And frankly, that's exactly what they should be saying. It fits in far better with the channel's identity than the old countdowns.

It's pacy, it's modern, it's interesting and it's extremely well made. Full marks to all concerned.

I was going to put it a slightly less polite way "We're the BBC, f*** off" - but it works the same. It has the same impact as the XFM top-of-the-hour jingle - this is who we are, this is what we stand for, we're great. Far better than the previous parochial region-led countdown.

The old countdown had great music but was totally irrelevant to what BBC News 24 is about, the new countdown addresses this very well IMHO, but the headline vamp needs a bit of pumping if you know what I mean. Wink
