How cramped!
Indeed! My living room seems more spacious!

Makes you wonder why they kept all the curves when the studio is a square shape and would have fitted perfectly with the square design seen in other regions. The left hand side wall where the sports presenter is looks even worse. Lots of grey paint - cheap effort BBC Birmingham.... sorry.

It's those god awful curved walls. They eat space like a fat person on the tube. If they were removed and replaced by barcos or something similar it would look great.

Oh, and the national studio's backdrop is in glorious 3D? You really think that abhorrence of a set at Midlands Today has NE&C's beaten? Your eyes need testing. Midlands Today's murky, cramped set, complete with a shadow-laden screen and excessive usage of the wide angle lens, isn't in the same league as the NE&C set.
the NE&C newsroom looks flat and fake.

To be fair though you are comparing apples with oranges. The set that BBC Birmingham has to use isn't exactly spacious whereas Newcastle has a former network studio with plenty of room to play with.
That said, I do think they could have thought about the Midlands Today set as it does come across as cramped and not exactly vibrant. Personally I was never a massive fan of the newsroom backdrop anyway because most of the time all you saw were 3 monitors a plant and the occasional person walking past. It does appear slightly better now the presenters are on a more elevated sofa - but it's left them looking a bit awkward and not really knowing what to do with themselves.
They certainly could have done better, but I guess they're a little limited with the amount of space available as it was only ever designed to be a standard size regional news set - shame really, but that's "progress".

And getting new furniture in is no easy task, 7th floor of a shopping complex with escalators and tight lifts.

Maybe they forgot to lift the other half of the sofa up the escalators and thought we'd never notice.

You know it's got lovely ramped access at the back, yes?

It's not laid out very well, in some shots it looks cramped, yet in the shot above there looks like loads of wasted space out front, it seems quite empty as though they're missing some piece of furniture (couldn't get it upthe stairs perhaps). The sofa's right on the edge of the tray, looks like it's about to fall off.
The real newsroom backdrop is a nice thing to have, but it's laking colour, perhaps a few red panels around it, or a section of red tint for the glass inbetween might brighten it up and create a more interesting backdrop. A proper desk wouldn't go amiss either.
