Does anyone know when Midlands Today are having their Sports Personality of the Year event? I can't seem to find any info about it anywhere. I know they have shown the nominations for 'Unsung Hero' but I havent heard who is nominated for Sports Personality.
...or maybe I've missed it
Apparantly the 'strange smell' was something to do with building works nearby, according to Saturday's Express & Star.
Spare a thought for Danny Scouser, as he & 'Ginner' have been trying to broadcast from the Brum wheel for the past 2 weeks but being thwarted by the weather.
They had rearranged for today instead, but this time a flat tyre on one of WM's radio cars scuppered things.
(Surely WM has more than one radio car, or are cutbacks that bad?)
They'll try again tomorrow.
Oh & Suzanne's back, as she's been ill recently.
For the record, Danny & 'Ginner' managed to broadcast from the Wheel.
Anyone hear my text mention around half 2, after hearing 'Round Round' by the Sugababes, asking whether 'This Wheels On Fire' was on the playlist, in case they tempted fate?
Danny's reply was along the lines of 'I've got enough problems with heights as it is!'
On the subject of Sports Personality, does this answer your question, my friend?
I'm even more puzzled now as last night Midlands Today had a very low-key presentation for the Unsung Heros & some other charity/volunteer types. It looked like it was all done & dusted by 8pm with just a few dozen folks there.
Usually there's a big 'do' at the Motorcycle Museum or somewhere which goes on all night & they are all in DJs in evening gowns & the Midlands Sports Personality is announced (usually following a 'phone vote), last year it was Ellie Simonds, the Paralympic swimmer.
Could be a budget issue? This year the BBC is quite keen to avoid conspicuous party events - there's a ban on the BBC contributing to staff Christmas parties (though 'talent' parties seem to be allowed...)
Also the BBC have tightened up the sponsorship rules on these events - so if they were sponsored in the past, they can't be now (though existing deals are allowed to end if they were multi-year AIUI)
Or it could just be that they've decided not to make such a big thing of it this year for no other reason than deciding to do something different?

Thanks Noggin, I think you could be correct.
I've had a look at all the BBC regions and only the East Midlands, Look East & the South West seem to have a 'Sports Personality' event, the others just going with the 'Unsung Hero' awards. Maybe their sponsorship is multi-year.
Just seems strange that I can't find any chat about it anywhere, although I haven't spent a great deal of time looking.
Again, thanks

Looks like the seating from the other Central studio has turned up on Granada Reports, since they went yellow!
Lucy Kite just Failed on Central Weather.
"It's not going to snow in the Midlands over the next 2 days, which is a relief"
If she'd have noticed it is snowing in Birmingham and Nottinghamshire.
Interesting to note that all the BBC Midlands radio stations, according to the RT, apart from WM, are giving up for the night at 6pm tonight & handing over to 5Live.(3rd year in succession, I think)
Why don't they all share with WM until their closedown (2am, I think, if the RT is correct.) at least until 12am, as WM has some concerts on, I think, or is there some technical/cost reason?

They'd rather sound London centric than Birmingham centric I guess, I can't imagine it would cost anymore to network the WM output.
