It was in October sometime IIRC. The posts were removed because Asa was informed by the judge presiding at the time that no comment could be made about it by the media until the end of the trial.

Trial?
Yes. Not sure what sort of trial though it wasn't mentioned.

Mod edit: Minor edit

I rather liked Chris James, he brought a bit of life to proceedings. I quite like the breakfast buffet idea Embarassed -- I guess kitsch isn't everyone's taste though!

I think even if you liked him or not, be had charisma about him-- sadly lacking in a lot of regional broadcasters these days.

Ah right, my apologies. I didn't realise it was still "sub judice", point taken.

Very interesting.

Hadn't noticed he'd disappeared off screen. (Only see the GMTV bulletins as the 'sad trekkie' likes watching it!)

Talking of 'dodgy characters', didn't former early 80's Central News reporter John Caine do a bit of bird for something rather naughty a few years ago?

I'm sure remember it being mentioned on TV Ark's forum at the time!

A real shame I thought he was brilliant on the GMTV bulletins and Central News reporter and presenter! He was original yet professional. Sad to see him go.

Oh dear.

Another Midlands Tv reporter in embarrassing off screen incident, but fortunately this one can be reported on (& mentioned on here!).

This week’s Sunday Mercury reports that Midlands Today & Inside Out reporter/presenter Ashley Blake’s restaurant business has crashed with £90,000 debts.

The ‘Exclusive’ report by the Merc’s Bob Haywood stated that :

He walked away from nearly £90,000 debts & admitted creditors won’t be paid a penny.

He has set up another restaurant with an almost identical name from the same premises.

The ‘ploy’ while perfectly legal, has been regularly exposed on TV consumer shows, such as ‘Watchdog’, which Ashley has worked on.

Ashley has said ‘The 2 cases are not on a par, as I haven’t set out to rip off people like the conmen do. I have been a victim of the business world. I have insisted that we didn’t take down any of the little people. The experience has been a nightmare & I’ve lost the same amount as the creditors. I feel the restaurant has a future, otherwise I wouldn’t be carrying on with it like I am’.

Ashley, with his partner, launched The Place 2B in Sutton Coldfield, four years ago & was relaunched as a Thai restaurant last March as it was about to be squeezed by competition in the town.

But the business was then hit by the wet summer, rising interest rates & the smoking ban.

Among the creditors are Birmingham City Council, Her Majesty’s Revenue & Customs & Tudor Seafoods of Birmingham Wholesale Markets.

The fascia board at the premises is unchanged from the previous ownership.

The BBC bosses reaction? ‘Not very happy’, says Ashley, ‘They said I should be reading the news, not making it!’

Back in 2005, he fell foul of BBC bosses, by sending an internal email mentioning the first anniversary of the restaurant. ‘It was a bit unfair but I realise I broke the rules. I sent the next emails from home!’ , he said at the time.

The BBC have declined to comment as ‘It was a private business matter & nothing to do with them’.

Where’s Gaunty when you need him, for a comment? (He had a similar issue, if you remember, or if you’ve read his book, but he didn’t go back into business though!)

What’s the betting our Ash will be keeping his head down for a bit on screen?

Let’s hope the MT editor keeps him away from live OB’s and/or items referring to food?

I’m sure we wouldn’t want another embarrassing incident on an OB, where someone innocently asks him, ‘Can you recommend a good Thai restaurant?’ or 'Do you want to borrow a tenner?'

Quick note on WM cover presenters.

Lee Stone was in for Janice Long at the weekend, while Paul Franks covered Brekky for Phil Upton, while Stuart Ellis is in for Paul Franks on Drivetime.

Tonight's New Years Eve Late Show is presented by Keith Middleton & between Drive & the Late Show, Alex Belfield invites you to spend New Year's Eve with the likes of our Cilla & Fatty Holmes!

(I was the one who texted into Franksy this morning & asked 'Who's Alex Belfield?' He's worked at various places apparantly!)

bob warman presenting tonight's central news, a couple of years back it'd be unthinkable for bob to work new years eve! i see they're using the shot of centenery square which ironically gives a nice view of the demolition of the old central studios.

this time last year we were celebrating 25 years of central tv ...

I'd noticed that too, I think they have been treating the CNW/CNE weekday evening bulletins in the last week as normal-- even though they've only been half the length they normally are!

CNE is still in the spare studio though-- presumably the normal CNE studio is having work done it?
