interesting article in this weeks archive edition of the mail. a 1978 interview where les ross talks about how he made it to the dizzy heights of presenting on brmb and writing for the mail. [click to enlarge]

almost as if it has been airbrushed from history - there used to be a welcome to the west midlands sign at the bassetts pole iirc - but that's long gone

Notice the Mail's never consistent with it's Saturday archive feature!
They missed out the local radio listings!
Mollie's back from her camping trip in France & besides bringing back a cold, she's now engaged
The listener's initial reaction by text?
'Engaged? Is he mad / sane?'
'You lot are awful!', she said.
We know, but it's bloody funny though!
Seriously though, congrats to Mollie & the future other half anyway!
Wonder who will move in with who, & where Mollie's 8 pussies fit in?

Nice new Midlands Today weather graphic today with Simon:

I always like his comical way of presenting. The weather graphics machine broke today so he used the excuse 'close your eyes and imagine as I speak'
No other region could do this IMO. Theyd all panic.

That isn't new. They always use that slide whenever the 'computers broken'. It's been used a few times and usually appears only when Simon's around unusually.

Ah I see. Indeed Simon is way more informal than Shefali, so maybe they use the 'Computers Broken' excuse to add a bit more time for items such as Simon Says etc.

the 6.00 headlines are live
Ah, my mistake. I got confused because I remember seeing Nick and Suzanne pre record the 1830 headlines several times, the wrong footage kept playing playing so they had to do it again and again. Then the titles wouldnt play.

Oh er... Opted out too early then on the six headlines. After the midlands pre rec headlines, it went to a live shot of Nick, who ad-libed for a bit.

On the Doolan WM show today, you had your chance to ring Keith 'Herr Flick' Beech, Managing Editor of WM, & give him your opinions on station output/
It's on 'Listen Again' until Sunday night/Monday morning, if you want to have a listen(It's the middle 11 till 12 hour!), but I'll probably give you a review at some point over the weekend once I've reviewed what I've 'taped' off Listen again, but there's mixed comments, for starters, on Les & Danny!
Tonite's MT has given you another installment of 'Former network TV & Radio presenters now plying their trade locally', by bringing you a live OB from Coventry with former Radio 1 presenter, now with CWR(& 6 Music ?), Liz Kershaw!

Indeed she was down at The Godiva Festival. Shes been on MT quite a bit over the past few years, didnt she also do a stint at Radio Leeds, and a few other regional networks?

As promised/threatened , here are the main points of Keith Beech's phone in about WM on Doolan's show on Friday.
Beech reckons figures have increased!
Caller 1 : Pamela in Nuneaton moaning about the volume of the beds under the travel & weather & the like. Beech says ‘It’s for presentation purposes, but we’ll have a look at it!’
Caller 2 : Barbara in Wolverhampton complaining about the pop music particulary in the Phil Upton show. Beech says ‘We still are a speech station though.’
Text criticisms : Comments on playlists(Chosen by music manager , based on research. Playlist roughly 500 to 1000 tracks.)
Can’t stand Les Ross. Bring back Danny Kelly to afternoons.
No current affairs phone in. (Allowed on likes of Doolan show!)
Where do you get the presenters from? If Daz Hale can get a job, there’s hope for us all! (All walks of life & characters!)
Reduce hours of Franksy show.
Station is awful. Critiscm of Upton, Ross & Doolan.
Why was Danny Kelly moved? Bring him back to afternoons.
(To get the best out of both Les & Danny!)
No Network Gold on Listen Again. (Restriction on space.)
Caller 3 : Webster in Handsworth critcised the God slot since departure of Robert Beckford. (Rimmer evolving the show gradually!)
Caller 4 : Janet in Great Barr sticking up for Les Ross.
Caller 5 : Kelvin in Darlaston praising morning schedule, but criticising the travel bed.
Texts : WM going down! More speech, less music.
Why can’t Trish Adudu present more. (no space at the moment, but is on Saturday evening soon!)
Bring back Boyden! (Not been too well lately. Will return soon, we hope!)
Do you get the presenters ‘cos they’re cheap?
Caller 6 : Paul in Sheldon – News not updated as often? Newsroom not monitoring programme output, eg breaking news on the Doolan show. (Newsroom busy. Things are manic!)
Caller 7 : Gary in Sheldon – Presenters having ‘Alan Partridge’ moments! (eg saying ‘This morning’ a lot & playing their name jingle then reminding the audience verbally too! (Programmes are reviewed regulary. Bad habits should be picked up on. Beech said there was internal awards on presentation & he’d been listening to a CD of a presenter who said ‘My friend’ on several occasions within the space of 5 mins or something. He didn’t reveal the name of the presenter, but my money’s on Danny Kelly!) Old chesnut of 24 hour broadcasting raised again.(Finances blamed again, but they want to do it live, not recorded!)
Caller 8 : Margeret in Stratford doesn’t like Janice Long. She’s missing Gauntie! (Why?) Likes Phil Upton.
Caller 9 : Edward in Wolverhampton praising Tony Butler & the sports team.
Caller 10 : Rob in Northfield also praising sport, but no comment on Kiddy Harriers, but comment on Worcestershire cricket? (H & W cover Kiddy, but historically Worcester cricket is covered as part of what is the Black Country was part of Worcestershire!)
Texts : Praise for Phil, Franksy, Chinnie & Mollie.
Caller 11 : Rick in Tamworth criticised Nikki Tapper for repetition, but loves the station otherwise.
Caller 12 : Paul on the mobile querying the technical quality of the Obs, why they keep dropping out, when national stations get signals back from abroad fairly easily?
(Topography of the area blamed partly, plus WM’s rapid response to events, where other outlets can plan with notice.)
Texts : Why Masala, when there’s an Asian Network?. (Only programme on WM for local Asian community, as Asian Network is now national thesedays)
News & Sport on time please! (Especially on Mollie’s & Franksy’s show!)
Caller 13 : Barbera in Stratford welcomed Les Ross to afternoons, in place of Danny Kelly.
Caller 14 in Solihull moaned about Les Ross moaning. ‘Bring back Danny Kelly!’
Caller 15 : Gerald in Wolverhampton praised Ed, but critiscised amount of football coverage at the expense of Chinnie & evening schedule.
Caller 16 : Norma in Lickey Hills again welcomed Les back, but presenters shouldn’t shout down the mic! Critcism about the God slot again.(Couldn’t help presenters changing!)
Caller 17 : Doreen in Coventry likes Doolan & Danny Kelly.
Caller 18 : Margeret in Winson Green praising Franksy & Mollie. (I get the impression Franksy might be entered for a Sony!)
