When Midlands Today first moved to the Mailbox, I was surprised that the new title sequence, whilst having the LDN-esque music, retained the white ovals on the clips, and the orangey encap.

But I now think this may have something to do with anticipating the future.

I'm sure that the South Today (Oxford) area, plus the far south of the current Midlands Today area will become a "BBC South Midlands" / "South Midlands Today" region at some point eventually.

The remaining Birmingham-based service will presumably then be renamed as something like "BBC West Midlands" / "West Midlands Today".

In order that the addition of the word "West" be not the only thing that changes when that time comes, it's probably a good idea to have held back from replacing (A) the white eminating ovals with red eminating circles, on the clips; and (B) the orangey endcap with the totally red one yet .

Therefore the "revamp" that coincides with changes to the region can be a slightly more significant one.

Maybe that's also why South Today still have the white ovals and orangey endcap? Perhaps they'll also not "go red" until the Oxford sub-opt area breaks away...

that’s certainly not a theory i have heard before, i think it's more down to the fact the powers that be in the midlands liked the orange design. given the older demographic that watch the programme, it does seem logical to use a nice warm, homely design than the overtly modern design of LDN. south midlands today would be a nice name for the new region if it were to cover the same area as central south, however in their infinite wisdom I think the beeb are planning to merge look east west with south today north to create a region based in milton keynes – presumably part of the south east macroregion? leaving midlands today’s coverage area intact - so I’m not sure how appropriate south mids today would be.

interesting to see mary rhodes doing the sport on midlands today this evening - only a couple of weeks after she filed a report about the birmingham VE day celebrations. makes you wonder if the policy of not employing someone new to replace steve clamp has been revised.

Hmm.

Are we playing a game this week on WM?

'Guess who's doing DriveTime' ?

It was listed as Shabina Atkhar this week, in for Franksy, but so far this week, it's been Trish AdontDont, Jimmy Franks(doing a double shift, Drive & Late, separated by Sportsnight!), & tonight Richard Wilford!

I wonder who tomorrow & Friday?

Doolan live today from Ladypool Road in Brum, according to the trails.

I thought Mary Rhodes was a network presenter?

Just now on Central News South was a Sports update for the entire Central region. Teams in the Central South region didn't get much of a mention but what would you expect? I'm sure I haven't seen it before and was presented at the Central West studios so I presume trhis was seen on all the 3 sub-regions.

It was from the Central West Studio with Central Easts ugly famale sports reporter. Usaly the teams from the east get mentioned on central west any way.

Haven't they always done a pan-regional sports roundup on a Sunday. It used to be presented by Phil Mepham when Central were in charge of ITV Sport (are they anymore!?)

Also interesting to note Wesley Smith was presenting on Saturday again - he'd be a lovely addition to the Central West team (never seemed like his heart was in Central South since Anne Dawson left...) - but I don't seem to watch much Central News anymore...whether that's deliberate on my part I don't know...I never seem to catch it.

Wesley did it today as well.
