I think they are likely to still have the dreadful Thomson 1707s that most regions (with the exception of BBC London (*) ) got around that time, as did BBC Millbank. (I think Norwich and Leeds got them too).

BBC London didn't because they were co-sited with the BBC Training studio at Marylebone High Street which had Philips LDK cameras - so it made sense to equip with those to share spares and local knowledge etc. (They were also in use in News in TVC and at Elstree for EastEnders)

BBC London have since moved to HD Sony cameras since the move to W1 - where all new studios use the same Sony HSC-300 HD cameras.

Surely BBC South West will get new HD cameras during their extensive 6 month refit? After all, they must have saved some money by not relocating to Sutton Quay as originally intended?

That sounds likely but with these days of doing it on the cheap I'd not be surprised if they get spares that are floating around the BBC to sort their gallery out but the cameras remain the same.

Midlands Today still use the Thomson 1707s and it shows! Very grainy...

Any new studio (or studio refit) is likely to get new HD cameras, but a new set isn't the same thing. SET have just got a new set - not a new studio.

Unlikely - 1707s will be reaching (if they haven't already) their capital repayment life.

Do we know any idea of timescales for installation of the new set? Will it be live tomorrow or they decamping for a little longer?

It took a while to relaunch when they ditched their last set in 2004(I think). I'm sure I remember Beverley Thompson apologised on one occasion as it wasn't ready because they had technical hitches with it.

They seem to have put quite a bit of effort into the CSO so I'd suggest it must be longer than a weekend refit.

Yeah, very much still in green screen mode tonight. It's been well done, almost all the usual shots are featured. We could tell something was a bit...off, but I bet most viewers will be none the wiser. There was no sofa set so I guess the CSO has been arranged there for now.

Just a few caps for those interested:

So is this a large green screen with each camera being locked off and each having their own background being keyed in or what?

I'm impressed at the effort they've gone to, must be fairly long term.
