New BBC Singapore studio

I thought that splitting it from the main thread might be nice... (July 2015)

I wonder now what's going to happen to the camera rigged in Studio C used for the screen in the previous version. It's good to see Newsday having a refresh though but I think it would work with the split screen view as before. Although Babita could do a time check before fading to the titles and Rico saying it after as he does now.

Double mic-ing doesn't help reduce echo AFAIK. It's usually used for one or two reasons. One to protect from mic failure (if one fails you fade up the other), and/or to cope with presenters or guests who have to talk in two different directions (one on each lapel).

If you have a very 'live' studio with lots of glass and other hard surfaces, then you usually have to saturate the non-visible areas with as much acoustic deadening treatment as possible and be quite aggressive with your sound mix, pulling back the mics of those not speaking a bit more than you might otherwise want to.

Automixing is also an approach that can be taken - and modern auto-mix techniques can be pretty effective. However that only helps reduce the impact of multiple mics faded up. If you have problems with a single mic, then acoustic treatments are your only help. (Dead walls covered in thick curtains, acoustic foam tiles in the grid etc.) If you have issues with air con noise etc. then some noise reduction systems can also help mitigate this.

Thanks for the reply noggin.

Curiously, Rico is now wearing a double-mic radio mic tonight.

It's interesting that they now seem to have completely adopted the BBC World News brand overnight - as opposed to BBC News. I was always under the impression that World, as a commercial channel, couldn't be marketed in the UK. Hence the BBC News branding. But now with Newsday, and Outside Source, that's been abandoned. They're using bbc.com when referring to the website too. I thought this was all covered by European competition law? Sky might have something to say about all this at some point.

Thought I'd compile a collage of split screen display used on Newsday throughout history:

IMO, the 'catwalk split screen' has a certain sense of realism compared to the computer generated screen. The new format is not that different from the one used back in the TVC days. I personally wish they could work something to bring back the 'catwalk split screen'.

Also, I don't think we see the 'Singapore' or 'London' location labels being used before the makeover too. It seems we've gone back to the old days again with the labels. I think it appears repetitive or redundant. I'm sure the opening voice-over announcer has made it clear to anyone new that we're seeing a presenter from London and another from Singapore.

Btw, I've noticed today's ABR with Rico at the catwalk seems rather dark in lighting compared to yesterday. I'm wondering if it's just my recording or is there a lighting issue?

I thought we would be seeing more of the real view. So far I only saw it used in the third hour on Monday, not sure if it was the same the other days.

In all honestly they should either go back to using the video wall or the TVC box screens to show both presenters talking.

I think the ceiling camera used during Newsday is also used regularly during Business Live (I haven't watched the show in a week or two). The camera could also get some use during the news paper reviews.

I'm curious is this camera considered the "snoop" camera shot as seen in the gallery pictures? If it's not I would imagine the snoop camera would be placed somewhere other than the news desk like in the corner where they could see the full studio. Snoop cameras in the US seem to be installed for a safety point of view when dealing with robotics. You'll always want to know where those behemoth's are moving and swinging. I can't find the article but I believe a few people have been injured when struck by a camera.

It's still dark in Singapore for the first two editions, So you wouldn't see much

Snoop cameras in BBC studios are usually non-broadcast CCTV-style devices, used for both safety with remote cameras and when there is a significant distance between gallery and studio, and you want to see if there are crew there (they don't wear talkback ALL the time...) They aren't unusual in studios even if that studio has no remote cameras. They are also increasingly appearing in OB trucks to let the director and sound supervisor see each other in place of the traditional window.

They are usually in positions that you wouldn't want to use on-air - and in some cases were still 4:3 long after the broadcast format had switched to 16:9.

Personally I'm glad that the fake 'catwalk split-screen' has been ditched, and in particular that dreadful shot that used to be used at the top of the hour with the camera in shot.

Felt very contrived, particularly when the presenter in London was just sitting there out of shot, and only seen on a screen. For no reason what so ever.

Had hoped barn-door effects had been consigned to the history books... The TVC era was probably the cleanest and neatest. (Mixed case locators neater and cleaner to read than all caps too)
