What times to the main US network TV bulletins go out (all bulletins throughout the day!).

Is CBS News relayed live on Sky - or taped like ABC World News Tonight for BBC News 24?

We've talked alot lately about the structure of advertising in various threads - and although I think I could get used to more breaks in a 30 minute programme, I can't stand the way US news programmes just cut straight to the next story without even a welcome back from the newsreader.

well CBS Evening News is on Sky News at 12:30, and i think that isn't live. ABC defienetly not live! But NBC is on CNBC.

BTW, on the coverage of bush's thingy today, on the headlines on Sky news, this came up:

sorry about the poor quality, but as you may be able to make out, that is from NBC News. I though CBS has the contract with Sky, ITN with NBC and ABC with BBC? HELP ME OUT!

Actually because of different timezones in the US, there are many parts in America where CBS news doesnt go out live either.

However from memory the 0030 on Sky IS live....
and the 0530 is a repeat.

US TV is different, the main networks have their bulletins going out at 6.30pm usually and thats it. They technically have News themed programmes that go out at breakfast time, such as NBC Today, The Early Show (CBS) or Good Morning America (ABC).

They do have News across the day, but it is Local by the affiliate, AFAIK a normal News day would be like...

5.00am Local News
7.00am Breakfast programme
12.00pm Local News
5.00pm/6.00pm Local News
6.30pm Main Evening News
10.00pm/11.00pm Local News

CBS News is played out live (without adverts and the sponsorship CBSNews.com and walmart,, sometimes a clean feed of the studio) at 12.00 midnight here or 11.30, can't remember. Sky then do the editing.

The CBS Morning News is played out at 09.00 in the UK (but not broadcasted, it is available), the clean version, then it is edited again which is played out at 09.30 - which has CBS adverts (american adverts are so cheesy) and the Early Show is played out after that, with adverts.

ABC is recorded, probably broadcast live at 12.30 or 11.30. Not sure about NBC News, probably live.

FYI - the edition of the CBS Evening News carried by Sky News is NOT live. The flagship newscasts on each of the 'Big Three' webs (ABC, CBS, NBC) has two feeds, one at 6.30pm Eastern Time and a second at 7pm Eastern Time. The first feed is picked up and carried by most affiliates in the Eastern and Central time zones, whilst the second feed is carried by those that opt to take local programming during the first feed. This second feed is also taken picked up by the affiliates in the Mountain, Pacific and Aleutian time zones that rebroadcast it at 6.30pm and 7pm Mountain Time as appropriate. Next time you watch of these newscasts and they do a live OB with a correspondent, pay attention to the aston - it usually says that the correspondent is 'Live EST', so that those in the West know that t was prerecorded.

Occasionally, Sky has been known to pick up the second feed of the brodcast, usually when the clocks adjust for Daylight Savings Time both here and in the States. I remember that on some of those occasions, the announcer said something along the lines of 'This is the West Coast edition of the CBS Evening News with John Roberts'. (It was a Sunday, obviously.)

I'm not entirely certain whether or not Sky News would have time to edit the 7pm feed of the bulletin in time for it to be broadcast at 12.30 - they'd only really have a few minutes to do it in. That's why they take the first feed at 6.30.

CBS Evening News Live is broadcast as a feed at either 11.30 or 12.00 here. Sky probably records that and edits that.

Well, if the Eastern time zone of the United States is 5 hours behind Greenwich Mean Time, I'm guessing that 6.30pm EST means it's 11.30pm in the UK... Which means that when the broadcast finishes, Sky have a half hour to edit out adverts, promos, sponsorship, etc. The last time I remember the CBS Evening News being broadcast live in the UK was on 9/11

There was no CBS Evening News on 9/11.

All of the networks cancelled their evening newscasts and just kept their rolling coverage going.

CBS did run a modified set of titles, but it was dominated by one story and was essentially just rolling coverage (and it did not end after 30 minutes).

Rather's opening line from that was excellent though:

"Good evening. Today is a day you will remember for the rest of your lives."

So Dan Rather opened the broadcast at 6.30 with a special intro., and the had a different set of titles? Well, to all extents and purposes, it was the CBS Evening News then. The reason I remember it so well is because Viv Creegor introduced it on Sky News at 11.30, saying something along the lines of 'We're going to see how the American networks have responded to the tragedy now by going live to New York for the CBS Evening News'.

IIRC, they came back from NY about 11.45 for the newspaper review as normal.

In certain areas, the main network newscasts are shown at 5:30... so you'd get a news sandwich in the early evening:

5:00 - local news
5:30 - national news
6:00 - local news
6:30 - regular programming

In other areas (ie. Seattle), the network newscasts are shown at 6:00!

5:00 - local news
6:00 - national news
6:30 - local news
