There have been rumours about the re-naming of MSNBC for about 6 months now. The only caveat is that NBC haven't officially confirmed anything about the idea (that I've seen).
It certainly makes sense, given that Microsoft's role in the TV operation has greatly diminished.
The only problem they'd have would be MSNBC.com - that isn't changing hands, and any re-branded MSNBC TV channel would presumably want to advertise their web presence. Would sound very disjointed to have advertising for MSNBC.com on the NBC News Channel. Nbcnews.com does currently redirect to MSNBC.com, but I wonder if contractually they are allowed to advertise that on the TV.
There were suggestions that any rebrand would co-incide with a mass studio revamp. Given that their HQ is a similar size to Sky's new set up, that's no small job.
Realistically, I don't think NBCU will want to keep MSNBC unchanged. It is flatlining as it is, has never had any significant success in the 9 years or so it's been on air, and is now being beaten by CNN Headline News. They'll either sort the thing out or shut it down.

The NBC News Channel is a service that NBC News and the local affiliates use to share relevant reports and footage with each other. It's not a public channel at all.
