Judging by the numbers on the picture on the previous page, WHDH has around 121% more viewer coverage than WNEU, which I think is what was really meant, but of course, it stumbled out of the guy's mouth wrong.

THE NEWS STATION - the "infamous" slogan used by WSVN and WHDH back in its heady tabloid days is rearing its head again. A new promo is harkening back to the "heritage" with a brief bumper. Well the fun is starting to bubble to the surface. After losing its NBC affiliation WHDH is bring back or emphasizing their slogan they introduced back in the day. Expect the news content to ramp up across the rest of the NBC Contract they will be hitting the viewers hard with promos and the like.

Looks like they're hoping for a repeat of successes that WSVN had when NBC left them.

This WHDH/Sunbeam vs NBC/Comcast saga takes another nasty turn as Sunbeam sues Comcast.

My guess is that since the other stations won't flip their network to WHDH and if CW leaves sister station WLVI, this could leave Sunbeam with a bad situation. If they are to lose NBC, they are not going down without a fight, but they're not going to get a repeast of WSVN

Complete ignorance here but how does payments with the affiliations work?
Do the local channels usually pay the networks for their content or the networks pay the affiliates for their airtime? I'm guessing the advertising revenue in primetime and other network slots forms part of any deal too.

It used to be the networks pay the affiliates. But KRON in San Francisco changed the trend by paying obscene amounts of money for carriage. Unfortunately NBC decided to buy their own affiliate screwing it over.
Typically affiliates pay a contract for carriage, a certain percentage for retransmission consent (what cable and satellite companies pay the stations to send their signal - this causes the occasional black outs) and they contribute towards sports rights.
Here's a contract from 2012: https://stations.fcc.gov/collect/files/74148/Authorizations/NBC%20Affiliation%20Agreement-redacted%20(13493610137977).pdf

And the price of the affiliation varies by market size and the signal strength of the station. As for KRON, KRON ended up paying for that trend change as the parent company filed for bankruptcy.

Well since WHDH, sister station to Miami's notorious tabloid-style WSVN 7, is going to loose their NBC affiliation. They are using the ratings bump from the Olympics to tout their new direction. They are ramping up their news production. Same thing they did when NBC dumped WSVN in Miami.
Here are the promos airing locally during the Olympics

Well WHDH owner Ed Ansin is no longer going to appeal a court decision ruling in favor of NBC. He plans on adding 30 more news staffers. MStarting January 1 they will run newscasts on weekdays from 5-10AM, 12-1PM, 4-7:30PM and 9-11:30PM. On weekends newscasts will run from 8-11AM, 6-7:30PM and 9-11:30PM. If you don't want to do the math they will be airing 87 hours of news a week. I imagine they will be getting the most bang for their buck with their CNN Newsource contract.
