I think they will have many more conflicting fonts and much larger lower thirds, otherwise it won't appeal to the US market. They would need some random italics in there for a start. Very Happy

To be honest, if anything I’d guess they’ll go more European in style than American.

Streaming Global News Service Will Have Bases In London and New York

Quote:
During yesterday’s Peacock presentation to investors, NBCUniversal announced that NBC News would team with Sky News on a new global streaming news platform for the streaming service.

While additional details -such as an actual name and launch date- were scant, Variety has reported the service will exist independent of Sky News and NBC News, with bases set up in London and New York and a team of journalists stationed around the world.

Comcast acquired Sky in Oct. 2018 for $39 billion. At the time of the acquisition, Comcast chief executive Brian Roberts said this international global news streaming platform would launch in late 2019. However, it now appears that the service is set to launch later in 2020.

In fact, according to Variety, this service is set for a limited launch in April and a wider national launch in July, However, there are no immediate plans for an international roll-out, despite the fact that Sky News is heavily involved.

If it seems like Comcast is overloading you with news, you might be right. In addition to the linear broadcast networks (NBC News and Telemundo), the linear cable networks (MSNBC and CNBC), the pay-TV juggernaut also launched free streaming service NBC News Now in 2019, which it intends to build out for the aforementioned Peacock service in 2020.

NBC News is also producing twice-daily U.S. news shows with Jeffrey Katzenberg‘s Quibi platform, which is set to launch in April. NBC appears to be devoting a significant amount of resources to this particular venture, including additional journalists and a separate studio at 30 Rock.

They also in the Peacock presentation said that the channel will be available to viewers. I’m not sure if it’s included on the free version or the Premium package. But if they plan on April it sounds definitely like it will coincide with the X1 (and Cox Contour - which licenses X1’s technology from Comcast) launch of Peacock.

Thats what Im curious about. Knowing Comcast they will lock this channel away into the paid tier. Thats how they operate. ORRRR... they will start it on the Free Tier and and the move it to the Peacock Premium once it takes off. It also sounds like it will only be avail in the USA to start with and not the UK or any other territories. That is an odd arrangement.

From what I’ve read it’s available to all X1 customers and internet users who use X1 Flex. Flex free to all internet customers, it’s just like the X1 but with out the live TV. From when I tried it it seemed pretty good, seemed to offer a lot of apps and I believe you can stream (and pay) all Xfinity X1 OnDemand titles. So since they’re giving it out to all internet customers (including the basic tier) I imagine it’s Peacock premium for all.

That report is confused.

NBC said that Peacock (NOT the news channel) would be initially US only, then would look to international launch.

They are suggesting the news channel launch and the Peacock launch are running to the same timetable. That may be true, but nothing of the sort was said at the presentation they reference.

I can’t imagine they’d go to the trouble of creating a global news channel and then only make it available to a select audience in the US. Somewhere - and apologies to American readers - not known to have a large appetite for international broadcast news.

Also a rival to Bloomberg? I think not, unless they are going to be opening offices in 100+ countries and going on a hiring spree never before seen in the industry.

NBC has an expansive base of stringers and camera persons on staff. Additionally they have the resources of the CNBC International channels and the affiliates. During breaking news they have in the past relied on CNBC staff.

They also like every other American broadcaster have international partners in each country and it appears the ITN (or specifically ITV) agreement is still going on. That provides a lot.

They probably could also utilize Euronews reporters/resources considering their ownership stake in that

According to the report the news channel would launch in APRIL 2020 and it wont be available outside the US and there are no immediate plans to do so. The article mentions this, despite the fact that SkyNews is going to be involved.

Regarding Xfinity/Comcast making Peacock Free to internet users is still in essence putting it behind a paywall of sorts. It remains to be seen what exactly those that dont use Xfinity/Comcast will get. I couldnt see myself paying for an additional streaming service.

NBC Universal/Comcast owns all of it, so they can choose to do whatever they want with SkyNews and other assets they now own around the world. Unfortunately, under Zucker's leadership, CNN Domestic and International has suffered greatly. (For the life of me I cant see why they continue to employ him, except it still makes Warner Media billions of dollars. so clearly the bigwigs could care less about that channel's quickly fading long term credibility particularly in the US). So....... this might be the opportunity to launch NBCSkyNews in a way appeals to North American audiences. It wil be a tough sell, I must admit.
In that same why that CNN Domestic uses CNN International anchors and reporters and other CNN Channels from other territories on the main domestic channel (sadly now on rare occasions)....I can imagine NBCSkyNews having its reporters on scene doing reports and live hits for MSNBC, SkyNews, EuroNews, NBCSkyNews.....

Right.. but as I said, the report is wrong and inaccurately quoting the Variety article. So you can requote the inaccurate Tvnewser report all you like. But that’s not what Roberts said. He was talking about Peacock, not the news service.

RE: the global journalistic presence of NBC. It’s puny compared to the BBC, Bloomberg, Reuters, etc. If they genuinely believe they’ve created the “world’s biggest news service” by buying Sky (their words) they’re in for a hell of a shock. ITN will not be involved in the channel.
