I will probably be way off the mark, but if this person is a 'surprise', which, I don't think Dermot is, could Eddie Mair be heading for the Six?
I actually had been thinking the same thing - and I hope that Eddie does move onto BBC One. As I understand it, he is considered very highly by people inside the Beeb, and while as a radio presenter, his top position would traditionally be on the Today programme, there were some concerns about the potentially double-Scottish partnership of him and James Naughtie. It would therefore make sense that he could be being prepared for mainstream TV.

I doubt Sophie will be back on the six when she returns after matenity leave - there is something else in the pipeline for her... and as for the six - I think you could be surprised as to which pairing will probably end up with the gig.

Just less than half of me thinks 'what a wonderful idea'.
The remaining just-more-than-half thinks "nooooooooooo" - since PM has gone from being predictable to essential listening. Such a move would be promotion for real talent, but would be a huge loss to Radio 4.

Why would there be a problem of a double-Scottish pairing? There would never be complaints of a double-English pairing, I would imagine. Why would it cause problems?

I presume Dermot and Natasha will do the Six or both move onto main BBC1 bulletins anyway seeing as Natasha's doing Sophie's maternity leave and Dermot seems to have taken over as cover for George.
Personally, I would put Natasha on the 1 a couple of days a week and maybe weekend bulletins too as she seems a little better on her own than with a co-presenter.

She was ok when she co-presented alongside Bruce Forsyth. Maybe THAT'S the new secret pairing for the Six.............aha, we have stumbled upon something here.

Well as you may have noticed from my username, I am Scottish, and of course I don't disagree with a partnership of Eddie and Jim, but I read an article on MediaGuardian which said that people at Radio Four thought that several listeners would feel that it would be unrepresentative of "middle England". It's a shame, but I hope that prejudices associated to accents would not affect The Today Programme's decisions - and if Eddie Mair is the right person to replace John Humphrys when he retires, he should definitely get the job. But of course, I would love him to get the Six O'Clock News presenting role - if it was at all possible.

So Media Boy, can you give us a hint as to when these presenter changes will begin?
Also if George is going back to reporting, what will he do? Might he become a special correspondant for the Ten?

I have just realised what would be a perfect pairing for the Six - Katty Kay and Adrian Finighan!! With Moira Stuart acting as the relief presenter.
I would put Sissons back on the Ten, with Finighan as the reliever, and Edwards back onto the One.
Fiona Bruce would be weekend anchor.
Kaplinsky - leave here where she is, or move her to Newsnight.
( That last comment WAS a joke, by the way)

Perhaps not, but they are perfectly capable and they have all got to start somewhere in terms of gaining UK wide recognition. No one knew who Huw Edwards was until he started on the One years ago!! Nor Kaplinsky, until she started dancing on BBC1.
I love the description of Adrian and Katty as being "minor". LOL.
