Thank god she's leaving the BBC. Worst newsreader in the world - as she isn't a newsreader, she's a name!

So she's pretending to read the news then? You need to make sense pal. Have you 'analysed' every newsreader in the world?

As a matter of fact ....

She is a name, not a newsreader. Strictly showed that - with NK it's about promoting herself, not doing her job - and that why she's quite happy to ditch one of the flagship jobs in newsreading to become the "face of five" ala Kirsty Young.

The million quid probably helps as well!

It's a shame really that Five have opted for her. With Kirsty Young they had a relative newcomer who wasn't established with the national audience - and it would have been good to see Five take someone again from the regions or Sky News and give them the chance of making the role their own.

I don't think Fiona seems to want a full time role though - I'd imagine she'd have one already if she did.

I seem to remember though that it was said after the 2003 relaunch that she was disappointed that she didn't get a bulletin of her own - many believed she would become the main presenter of the 6 with George covering Huw on the 10. In my opinion, this would have been a much better schedule rather than opting to have two presenters for the 6.

Mediaguardian are saying she will be paid in the region of £250,000.

EDIT: Its gone up now to between £400,000 and £500,000 a year at Five.

Also, she has signed an exclusive contract that will prevent her from doing any more BBC presenting work.

Fantastic - great to get the dithering girl off the BBC!

Quick reminder of one of her worst gaffs last year... "and the big news this hour is that Germany is out of the World Cup... (PAUSE)... no that's not the news at all...

I also vaguely recall the last time the contract was negotiated there was some 'talk' put out that there was an offer of a Vanessa type show on ITV. This was all dismissed as posturing and rumours once the bbc had given her another contract.

I think she was just one of the names mooted as a possible replacement for Trisha when she left ITV. I don't think anyone genuinely took the rumours seriously though.

It's also worth noting that presenters on News 24 and BBC World won't all neccessarily consider a move to the "nationals" to be a promotion, as inferred by one of the posters above, in relation to Jane Hill.

Many of those channel anchors (World in particular) would never wish to be presenting the Six o'Clock News.

On the other hand, there is one particular presenter who appears on both News 24 and BBC World, who does have incredible connectivity with the viewer whilst, first and foremost, being an excellent journalist and would be able to handle any situation thrown at her. She would be absolutely ideal for Network news, bringing gravitas with connectivity. She is not one of the "traditional" suspects that you have all mentioned above.

I am referring to Manisha Tank.

And those of you who know her, and those of you who have watched her, could not deny that she is indeed an ideal candidate for the post!

Only snag(s): perhaps not a widely known phenomenon a la Kaplinsky or Bruce. Also, perhaps Manisha falls into the category I mentioned at the top of this post - i.e. she is far more at home at BBC World?

There is also Mishal Husain............

Mishal Hussein has in fact presented on the nationals as cover for a couple of years now. She has in the past presented on Breakfast, and now regularly presents the Sunday BBC1 News.

I can!

Nowt wrong with her - she just doesn't exactly set the airwaves on fire for me.

You can hardly call him a stalker? It's printed in the Radio Times, so at a guess he flicked through some pages.

Guess again. I'm going to suggest that some posters in this thread could name days on/off over the course of the last month for a handful of presenters.

It rather reminds me of what happened to Jill Dando. Its creepy and unneccessary.
