Have the 10 been using a different bed during the programme? I was watching the other day and the bed also had the orchestral strings come in. I cannot remember if that was mid-programme or closing but it definatly had the strings in the background.

Try ringing BBC Information?
Remember the really clunky line "A look at the time - it's a quarter past six. The headlines.."? (always delivered without a so much as a glance in the direction of a watch) That got dropped after a caller to the duty office called it "repetitive and unnecessary".

It was a friend who called in. Honest.

You haven't seen the six recently then? They are still using that bloody catchline. Sian just looks at the table and says it, while George, well I doubt he knows where he is.
The Six really is appauling in pres terms at the minute. I can't stand that blood HEADLINES aston, treating people like they are in a nursing home.

The intro headlines also annoy me on the Six O'clock News. For some reason, they use the bed with one bong and keep restarting it after every headline. That usually means it sounds a mess, as it's rarely re-starting in time with the beat. I don't know why they can't either copy the One with the 5 bong bed, or the Ten with 1 bong and 3 bongs respectively. I much prefer the One's approach -- short, simple headlines in time with the original head beds. The Ten's waffle at the start used to annoy me, but I'm getting used to it now.

Same system as the Ten in use for the One now, actually. IMO suits it better than the shot of Anna, the desk and the screen.

Regarding the BBC1 beds -- they'll have been in use for six years in May. I know for a fact that new opening beds were made for the 2004 rebrand, but they were never used. The promo and closing beds are used on air, but the opening ones were shelved. A shame really, as they fit with the titles much better than the 1999 ones. Does anyone know why they've never been used?

Rob, would the opening bed be the one used on the Ten News Extra Promo?

I've always wondered why the national news didn't use the new beds. I seem to remember when the new titles were launched, someone confirmed they played the wrong bed and it would definately be used the next day but it never happened. Sad Perhaps because they couldn't decide on a thunderclap or something. Shame really.

As for the layout of the headlines, I agree that the 6 is too messy. I used to like the 1 sticking to the 5 seconds for every headline. As someone said, they are using the 10 layout. Perhaps this is just for the election.

Woohoo, 600th post! Smile

That's the February 2004 Promo Bed -- it's been in use for over a year now mid-way through the programme. The new opening beds are similar to that, only without the strings and with thunderclaps at 5 second intervals.

For the 1999 package, David Lowe composed opening beds, a promo bed (with the cymbal thunderclap -- still used on the One and Six) and a closing bed. When he remixed the music last year, he made new copies of them all, but only the promo and closing beds have been used.

I think the main reason the new beds weren't used is because the headline bed is the part that the regions opt out of - and they all have the old bed - it would have sounded nasty to opt out of the new bed into the old bed.

why couldn't they use the new bed? Do a scotland and play the thunderclap so deafeningly loud you forget where the beat was

Its a pity but I can see the logic in that. Would it really be too much of a problem to have the bed sent to the Nation's/Region's?
Midlands Today could really do with a new bed for that fab new look!

I know -- how hard can it be to send a CD or MD to each of the regions with the updated beds on? They did it in 1999, so why can't they do it again? I find it very hard to believe that that is the reason for them not being used.

I think the new backdrop is far too busy.
Look at this image Charlie posted earlier of a wide of the studio - it's like there's a bank of supermarket shelves behind her:

http://www.rp-networkservices.com/tvforum/uploads/n6_1.jpg

Busy busy busy. Not that I'm exactly in a position to like any alteration - I hate this entire design - plasticy, gimmicky, cheap and lacking in distinction.
A whole new scheme is in order...

I really like the World/News 24 headline re-cap beds (used at *.10, *.15)

There's more action in those with a nice bassy 'thump' every 3 seconds. It would be suited as the main bed at the TOTH.
