I'm a big Moira fan and was somewhat gutted when the newsreader position was dropped on Breakfast but I have felt for a long time that this was inevitably going to happen because she is not a journalist and just a reader.
I think with all this emphasis 24 hour news these days and with the BBC shifting presenters between the BBC1 bulletins and News 24 that you just have to be a journalist to cope with it.
I don't think ageism has much to do with it - the BBC have quite afew older-age presenters - Chris Lowe, Nik Gowing, Big Al, Martha Kearney, Nick Owen (both of them), Huw Edwards, Jeremy Paxman, Chirs Eakin, Tim Wilcox, Gavin Esler, Mike Embley, Peter Sissons (OK bad choice
)...
Though saying that the only older female I could really think of as you can see is Martha - and even she's leaving for radio now.

Huw Edwards is only about 45, which is quite young.
If you look at all the main presenters on BBC1 News (One, Six and Ten) none of them are a day over 50, (maybe Geoge is not sure about him).
I remember when Peter Sissons left the ten in 2003, he also said it was beacuse the beeb was ageism.

Your BIG MOIRA signature is amazing, but not as amazing as the lady herself. Love her or loathe her, you gotta admit that Moira is something of a national institution.
It is very disappointing when broadcasters feel that their staff are "over the hill" for whatever reason. Gravitas and human connectivity are surely what should mater, and which Moira Stuart has in bucketloads.
(Can one of the Mods or the original correspondent please correct the title of the thread from 'Stewart" to "Stuart').
Thanks.
