Depressing news on the frontpage of tonight's West End final of London's Evening Standard, that Mo Mowlam is "close to death". It comes nearly a week after it was announced she was being moved to a hospice.

This from the Standard's website:

Mo Mowlam's health 'deteriorating'
18 August 2005

The condition of the critically-ill former Northern Ireland Secretary Mo Mowlam has deteriorated.

The former Redcar MP, 55, was transferred from hospital to a hospice last week.

She had suffered a brain tumour, and her increasingly frail appearance has prompted fresh fears for her health in recent months.

She is being cared for at the Pilgrim Hospice in Canterbury.

Ms Mowlam - one of New Labour's most popular figures - stood down as an MP at the 2001 election after 14 years.

She had been made Northern Ireland Secretary when Labour swept to power in 1997 and quickly made a name for herself as a down-to-earth and often too-honest politician.

She won universal acclaim for her perseverance in working towards the Good Friday peace agreement the following year. The achievement was magnified by the fact that she was recovering from treatment for the brain tumour at the time.

However she faced growing opposition from mainstream unionists in Ulster and was replaced by Peter Mandelson.

She became Cabinet "enforcer". But her time in the post was marked by a steady stream of reports that someone in high places was briefing against her. There were also suggestions that the Prime Minister Tony Blair had been irritated when the Labour Party conference gave her a longer standing ovation than him.

She became even more outspoken after leaving the Commons, saying it was "harder and harder to defend what the Labour Government is doing".

BBC Radio Kent reporting this afternoon that she has refused food or not been given it (not sure of the semantics) for the past couple of days.

I think it is most likely the former. I doubt there are many hospices in the country that would not give you any food, no matter how ill you are.

I bet Tony is thinking ''hmm, didn't go to Robin's bash, wonder if it'll look even worse if I don't turn up for Mo's?'' Let's just hope she's not friends with a certain Channel 4 Racing pundit, eh.

Looks like we are set to loose another great politician. Losing Robin Cook and Mo Mowlam in one month would be a political tragedy.

Mo Mowlam was an excellent politician and was the best Prime Minster this country never had..

I met Mo a few years ago having stood down from the Government, she was signing copies of her book in Manchester, a very warm, friendly and down to earth person..
Will never be another politician like Mo Mowlam.
My thoughts go to Mo and her family.
