I've heard of the term 'mirror's being used to describe something which hides some of the dull bits of news studios and in some cases makes them look much larger than they are. I think BBC News used to do it a lot in N6.

The question I'd like to ask is have you any other examples (or even the one in N6 I'm thinking of above) of these mirrors being used and if so how does it all work and could this technique be used just as easily in other types of television, e.g. big entertainment shows like those in TC1 and LWT1? Are they already?

Chris Webster uses mirrors a lot.
He designed the old N6 - 3 projection screens and mirrors either side to make it look wider, as well as the old Liquid News (the set now used by Points West)

He also designed 'Joseph', which was very reflective, with the set around the staircases covered in Silver J's which reflected the light - and made the set look much more flash than it really was.

I see, thanks very much. Does this Chris Webster have a website per chance?

I think BBC World used to use Mirrors, or still do, but i distinctly remember mirrors on the left hand wall of the studio during the cream & red era, it made the newsroom seem twice the size.

A mirror was used in the old Sky News centre to make the newsroom look bigger. Thats the only example I can think of!

Not news I know, but spot the mirror in this screengrab of 1980's Childrens ITV:

One of the previous BBC World sets used a mylar (or similar) mirror to increase the feeling of space, and make a flat wall look more interesting. Could well have been another Chris Webster set.

I'm afraid you're slightly off there. The Points West set is actually the old, original "The News Show"/"BBC Three News" set, not the last Liquid News set. They were quite similar - though the Liquid News set took much larger plasmas than the BBC Three News set. AIUI the old Liquid News set was skipped (minus the plasmas) ... The plasmas from both sets were re-used for the re-launched 30 minute BBC Three 7 O'Clock News.

The final Liquid News set had a mirror at the end of the long wall of plasmas, the BBC Three News set was symmetrical (after a slight tweak) and had mirrors at either end of a wall of 5 smaller plasmas, that made it look like a much longer wall (as long as you didn't put any text in the screens you could also see reflected...)

How exactly is it done? Is it a relatively easy process which can be done in any Studio or is it quite complex?
