I seem to recall it went to air at or around 6pm as I remember it being close to the start of the Six O’Clock News.

I was fairly sure there was a clip of the continuity around it on YouTube, but all I can find is the Six following it - introduced with the globe, suggesting Her Maj was on at 6pm.

Was it carried by all channels? I remember watching TFI Friday they evening and I think it preceeded that.

Incidently that was a compilation of music performances from previous episodes, introduced by Chris Evans explaining that it didn't feel right to do their usual show that week. I can't imagine how they'd follow that

I'm not sure about all channels, but I think ITV showed it at least. In those days the Early Evening News would have been coming off air just before 6pm, so they may have extended ITN slightly. I can't recall for definite, though.

There's a bit of Granada continuity here, including a trail for Granada's bulletin and the start of the Early Evening News where it's announced they'll be showing it as part of the bulletin.

Also watch out at the end for CBBC handing over to BBC2 showing the funeral with signing.

In Ireland, RTE News aired it too I think, they shunted their 6pm Angelus chimes for the broadcast which aired on the dot of 6pm.

I think now a days they have been effectively replaced by speeches outside/inside Downing Street. The few times statements similar occur they tend to be prerecorded clips instead of a live broadcast.

Going back to these, have any of the more recent ones been standalone statements on the main channels - or would they generally have always been part of a news special of some sort?

I think there was a statement during the coalition negotiations in 2010 where Gordon Brown was effectively cued by mediaboy - he didn't appear at the door of Number 10 until the Six O'Clock News had cut to Downing Street.

The Queen’s broadcast I most remember from my lifetime is the one she delivered in the wake of Princess Diana’s death in 1997. The Royals came in for heavy criticism at the time which I seem to recall led to the broadcast to address the nation. It was bang on 18:00:00 I think, and I seem to recall C5 News incorporated it into a special bulletin ?

It was indeed bang on and the BBC went straight from continuity to the shot of Her Maj if I recall.

I remember the 1997 one. I'm fairly sure it started at either 17:55 or 18:00 as a clockstart but was done live. Definitely taken on all channels.

I've got a memory in my head of Central finishing the speech then going straight into that night's Home & Away with no linking continuity or ident whatsoever. (At that time they aired the show at 18:00.) Nowadays of course you'd then stay on air for reams and reams of analysis.

As I recall the issue at the time was that Diana was doing her thing as a sort of media personality and the royals didn't tend to really acknowledge her in the public space - as technically she wasn't a royal anymore. Generally the arrangement seemed to be that Diana did her thing and the Royals did theirs, or at least that's how I remember it. I was about 10-11 and on the cusp of watching/reading news

When news of her Death came there wasn't really any immediate statement from the palace and I'm sure I recall it being a good day or two before they said something as I remember people being a bit peeved. I think there was also some debate on if the Royals would give her a funeral based on her status and that was up in the air for a bit too.

Imagine the Internet reaction if that had happened today. People who have never said a prayer in years giving out about RTÉ giving airtime to a foreign state head. I imagine the equivalent of the day, the switch board lit up with complaints.
