East Midlands Today's top story this evening was about a boy who lives in the East Midlands and is starring in a Michael Jackson production in the West End. Talk about over-kill.

East Midlands Today are excellent at finding tenuous local links to stories that have been shown on the national news just a few minutes before. I knew they'd find a way of reporting on Michael Jackson - though I suspect many regions have been doing similar things today.

... and so the BBC bring in Jeremy Vine to present their News Special.

Probably quite a good call. One of the few BBC News presenters with live experience and some stature who also has a degree of credibility in discussing music, as he's a Radio 2 presenter who plays a reasonably amount of music on his show.

I wish the BBC News camera operator in Los Angeles would properly frame Rajish Merchandani (sorry for the spelling). Where they've upscaled the picture his head is nearly always cut off the top of the screen.

I suspect if it's an American crew they'd be shooting 4:3. The BBC would traditionally crop this to 14:9 pillarbox, thus losing a bit off the top and bottom of the frame.

Did anyone see the BBC Ten o'clock News's montage tonight at the end of the show? They intercut the original Thriller video with the CiN EastEnders spoof from a couple of years ago (among a few other remakes, namely the prisoners in Korea or wherever it was and some wedding video re-enactments). Awful... just awful...

Surely they can communicate to the camera operator to tell him that half his head is off the top of the screen.

Matt Price is there now, the same thing is happening again. Please frame them accordingly!

You'll be pleased to know they're showing that package on the BBC News channel again, right now!

They also still keep fluffing up the end credits with it zooming out on his RIP text and it just flicks to black.

Very impressed with the Sky News documentary for Sky1. It'd still be well done if they spent weeks on it, but the fact that it was turned around in the space of a day is remarkable really. Credit goes out to everyone involved in it, they must have been under severe pressure to get it ready on time.

On a pres note, the doc saw a return of the 2002-2005 graphics for some of it, with archive footage from the trial reconstructions used.

Huge huge story for all those that are moaning about the amount of coverage. It's the biggest news story of the year and the biggest news story in terms of shock in years. I'd imagine Sky's viewers today will be double or treble the normal, if not more.

Oh excellent News at Ten.

Ratings for Thursday evening are now in for US networks. A massive win for CNN, who are normally placed 3rd in primetime now behind FOX and MSNBC

... Is it really necessary to fly Emily Maitlis out to LA for this? Surely the excellent Mirchandani / Willis combination could have continued to cover the continuing events adequately?
