Of course the amount of coverage is necessary. For heavens sake, the man is of similar stature to Elvis and the Beatles. He has shaped pop culture like no other living person, is hugely influential and leaves the most incredible legacy. Without sounding patronising, half of the forumers on here won't have grown up with this legend from start to finish. The coverage channels are devoting, regardless of controversy, scandal and gossip is entirely justified.
BBC soap EastEnders has filmed a last-minute scene to be edited into tonight's episode referencing Michael Jackson's death, Digital Spy can exclusively reveal.
A scene towards the beginning of the episode will see Denise Wicks (Diane Parish) wish her surrogate father Patrick Trueman (Rudolph Walker) a happy birthday, before mentioning the sad news of Jackson's passing.
The show will also contain a track from the King Of Pop playing in the background of a scene elsewhere in the episode.
They did a similar thing when The Queen Mother died, I think they did when Princess Diana died too, I know Brookside did with Diana anyway...

To be fair unlike other recent events I don't think many have said the coverage is out of proportion - but there is a limit to how long a story can be considered "Breaking News". Surely Sky could use a "Top Story" strap instead.
Do we know if Jackson's last gig (1997?) was recorded. I suspect if a channel aired that in tribute, rather than a repeated documentary or quick turn around tribute, it would rate quite well.
I wish the BBC News camera operator in Los Angeles would properly frame Rajish Merchandani (sorry for the spelling). Where they've upscaled the picture his head is nearly always cut off the top of the screen.
Rather crematorial beginning to the BBC Six tonight.
That's certainly a good description.
East Midlands Today's top story this evening was about a boy who lives in the East Midlands and is starring in a Michael Jackson production in the West End. Talk about over-kill.
