I refer you to TV Ark's bloopers page where there's a file of Michael Buerk at the end of the bulletin finishing as if angry or something.

Any ideas what's happening?

Yeah, I saw that and wondered. It is really weird! Perhaps someone in the gallery shouted at him or annoyed him or something?

First ever time I heard "Thank you" at the end of the news! Laughing

Yeah, I was thinking that - perhaps he needed to speak for longer or something since they're very late with the music?

Still, seems very rude and curt. Hmm... anyone else got some thoughts?

Does anyone know what the News story was? As from the clip it seemed rather serious, considering it looks like he is only wearing black and white, and he mentions that Breakfast Time will be on at 6.00am, which IIRC didn't start until 7.00am usually.

Quite funny though, anyone told him when he was going to go off air, he just talks even though the music hasn't started.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/onthisday/hi/years/1989/default.stm suggests the main major news stories were:

*East Midlands Airport Crash
*Tiananmen Suqare
*Marchioness disaster
*Wall of Berling Wall

I would guess the Marchioness disaster would be most likely for the report.

As as aside, doesn't the ending (albeit botched) beat the pants of anything anyone is offering today?

The Marchoness disaster happened very late on a Saturday evening - so I doubt it was that. The 'awkard' ending happens over a standard ending of the news.

The Kegworth air crash happend on a mid Sunday evening, so that is the more likely one.

"Thank you.."

I thought back then it was 6.30am. It did not start at 6.00am until the early 1990s.
