Sorry if this has been mentioned before, but surely this is just an attempt to get the News 24 presenters a bit more recognition?

Just a bit of promotional folly, one might argue.

Nah, Maxine's old school.

She's been the senior presenter for World for a number of years and surely it might be argued, if you were going to plug News 24 you'd chose someone more mainstream News 24 ala Hill, Eakin, Mitchin or McCoy.

Not really - the weekend bulletins have traditionally used News 24 presenters if Darren (and in the case of the Sunday Ten - Fiona) are not available. Jane and Matthew have done many of them - maybe they've just decided to widen the pool a bit. After all, Maxine was a stalwart of the 0735 bulletin - and has done nationals before.

Journalistically she is rock solid (I believe she managed Reuters bureaux in Asia prior to moving to the BBC - possibly via GMTV?), and has a nice, warm, but appropriate manner.

Maxine did an excellent bulletin this evening. She has an excellent delivery, very assured and with a great deal of gravity. I hope she does read the 10 as listed by the Radio Times, I'd rather she did it than wooden Dermot or Darren any day.

See, what did I tell you all? She is perfectly good. And qualified too.

I am dissapointed to see that my other thread was closed.

I think a new thread alerting other users to a milestone in newsreading (A freelancer presenting a flagship bulletin) was worthy of a place on this forum.

**** this. I'm off.

And now on BBC1, the 10 o'clock news with Huw Edwards!

Most BBC News presenters are freelance.

A milestone?! Maxine has done national BBC1 bulletins before and even presented breakfast with Sian a few years ago.

Indeed they are - very few staff presenters, I can only think of three off the top of my head. The rest are on a contract or totally freelance. The reason for that is if the management decide the face no longer fits it's easier to get rid of them.
