There is a case for Politically planned 'confrontational debate' in the UK though. If signed correctly it'd work. I would run it with a 'grandee' of the host party chairing the programme, in which members of the other parties could discuss the issues, with a less than unbiased chair.
I'd nominate Michael Portillo, Lord Mandelson and Lord Steel as chairmen for the three main parties.
As for Thompson's comments he could of course be playing the irony card too cleverly.
