It's not a surprise as such, but I agree with the sentiment of your post.
If Mark's only signed for a year, has someone else been appointed US editor (or similar title) but isn't due to start for some time because of personal circumstances/ work commitments?
Who - other than you guys - suggested there is to be any such thing as a U..S. Editor?
I'd also suggest your prognostication (perhaps unwittingly) strays into the realm of speculation about someone's personal life, which I would submit isn't in the best-of-taste. Please just wait and see... everyone's reading far too much into it.
Actually only you have brought anyone's personal lives into the matter - I'm not referring to anyone in particular, merely your own remarks that the reason Mark isn't US editor isn't coincidental.

But he won't be U.S. Editor because that position doesn't exist and has been pulled out of thin air here. I've said I'm not at liberty to comment further other than to say what I've said, but there's no point in speculating further based on a pre-supposition which I've said is erroneous.
ETA: I only made a glancing reference to somebody's personal life to indicate that speculation on the subject as such wouldn't comport with the rules around here, and to explain why I can't say more.

So in all probability, somebody is moving to a new position, or taking maternity leave etc - I don't think I'm being unreasonable by suggesting that either.
Obviously Mark's position isn't a Jon Sopel type editorial position, but still it's a fantastic signing for Sky News. I can see him working very well with Kay Burley - and really taking the Trump administration to task when needs be.
