Did any UK broadcaster show the picture of the shot policeman? I heard the BBC say they had chosen not to and I haven't noticed Sky showing it. I haven't noticed it on TV at all actually. What did ITV and Channel 4 do?

Sky have been showing it - just seen it on there now on a recorded piece on "The Story So Far", as it were.

Yes, they showed a very small version of it, they didn't show it full screen. I think Live at Five is the first time they have used pre-recorded reports for a number of hours so this may have been the first time they showed the picture. I was actually hoping they would mention the circumstances that the picture came about. Sky News said that the police released it but on some websites it is credited to a news agency. I wonder who took it and why.

EDIT: A schoolgirl has just told Jeremy Thompson on Sky News that some pupils at her school saw Raoul Moat outside the school. I wonder if they will go with this or wait for it to be backed up by a better witness.

Not to be disrespectful, but if this thing had happened before the events in Cumbria last month, I don't think it would be getting this amount of coverage.

It might not be happening at all.

Yep, Sky are in full frenzy mode with this one. They even brought the handwriting analyst in to add depth to the coverage.

Questionable the coverage this story is being given - the press seem to be playing right into his hands.

I think all of this media attention will be interpreted as positive reinforcement by other irrational would-be nutters, thereby increasing the likelihood of them carrying out similar actions in the future. I've no doubt that the coverage of the Cumbrian killings influenced Moat's decision to go on a spree himself, and as long as the media sensationalises the story, or gives any implication that the killer is a victim, this incident will in turn influence someone else.

Sky News has been especially appalling today with their hand-writing expert and numerous psychologists. They even interviewed a man who was charged with murder many years ago and had subsequently gone on the run for a whole decade, apparently to 'gain an insight into the thought processes of a fugitive'.

As far as I know, none of the broadcasters have made an attempt at balancing out the ridiculous 'hard done by northern man who's been persecuted by the nasty police and lost everything, boohoohoo' image out by mentioning that Moat was actually imprisoned after being found guilty of assaulting his daughter and that he's abused two ex-girlfriends. Although maybe this information would potentially prejudice a future trial.

Frankly, I just wish the media would only report what the police tell them. 90% of today's coverage has consisted of interviews with Moat's friends, who all say he was a lovely man, of course, which isn't true, and analysis which paints him as a victim, which isn't true either, because he's a self-pitying bully who threw his toys out the pram when the police came along and told him he wasn't allowed to abuse his daughter. (How dare they.)

The only broadcaster acting responsibly and unsensational this time is the BBC. The rest ought to be thoroughly ashamed.

I think that's probably the first time that I've agreed with you wholeheartedly, Chie.

Alternatively, Chie could just be plain wrong.

TV Forum isn't the place to ponder such things, but if you would indulge me for a minute...

If you follow the narrative of the story, this individual (albeit a convicted criminal) considered himself a "family man".

And then he is is dumped by phone by his girlfriend shortly before his release, and is faced with the idea of having nothing to return to. And then he goes berserk.

So, he could be an attention seeker as Chie suggests, or he could just as easily have thought nothing about the recent "gun rampage" event, and be fixated on his own personal tragedy.

Who knows? I don't. Neither does Chie.

That said, I do agree that the media have a certain responsibility not to "encourage" attention seekers - as per Charlie Brooker's insightful piece. Sky are the worst for this, of course. But we knew that.

But, perhaps this situation is different from the "usual" dispossessed teenager scenario.

Either way, Sky will probably be working on an animating shotgun to overlay on the heads of his potential victims.

That's what they do - and that's why I don't watch Sky News.

Neither should you lot.

Out of interest, if you don't watch Sky News, how would you come up with this idea of yours?
