I can't get to a television at the moment, so i'm relying on internet websites to keep me informed, but does anyone know whether terestrial channels have run any news reports, or broken in to programing for summaries??..

I would imagine there would be a news report in the next available junction on say BBC One or ITV1

Although this probably has nothing to do with maintenance, how many more Train crashes will it take before the Government take notice?

There is nothing to indicate so far that this incident was in any way caused by deficiencies in the railway network or its operations. Accidents will always happen and the fact is - despite the high-profile lapses in recent years - that rail has an excellent safety record.

It would be more useful to ask when people will take notice of the number of people who die on Britain's roads every day.

There are apparantly 8 Carriages, 2 Power cars Totalling 10 'vehicles' that make up this particular train.

Trains on this particular stretch travel upto 95mph as this is the speed restriction.

Network Rail have confirmed the Level Crossing was working and with no faults. The car/vehicle was also apparantly stationary on impact. Whether this was a breakdown or not is unclear however no call was made to the signal manager from the phone located at the level crossing to report the breakdown.

The first passenger car after the 1st Power car has also been twisted in the centre.

There were 180 known to have booked tickets to this particular train. However this doesn't include people who purchased tickets before getting on the train and could result in a figure of upto 300 or more on this particular service.

The level crossing is also intact with barriers still down and lights flashing.

The 1st reported death was/is believed to be the car driver. A body has also been reported to have been found within one of the first class coaches at the front of the train. Remarkably the driver of the train itself is reported to be unharmed but in shock - I don't know how true that last bit is as it seems slightly unbelievable.

I'll post more as I get it.

Someone on another forum found the area on MultiMap.

The issue will be down to whether the 'half-barrier' crossing was working correctly and whether or not the driver of the car involved was following the rules of using the highway.

It's about bloody time someone took notice about Britain's Railways.

This is probably a conversation for another day, but at present it appears the train hit a car on a level crossing. Common sense tells you trains have the right of way on a level crossing. I don't think you can necessarily blame the railways yet.

Well put. Someone on I think ITV News Channel pointed out there were 10 fatailites a DAY on Britain's road network. Yet you have to go back a few years to find a single railway death.

All of the train staff have been accounted for, one member of staff on the train did receive some minor injuries.

Death doll definatly 2. One of these is from the 1st First Class carriage.

(Level crossing WAS operationally sound and no faults were reported)

If there was a fault with the crossing the train 'should not' have passed the signal further up the line because the signal would have displayed Red because of the crossings automation.

This is very disturbing news indeed. Days after the BBC's Whistleblower was shown as well. It's about bloody time someone took notice about Britain's Railways. Although this probably has nothing to do with maintenance, how many more Train crashes will it take before the Government take notice?

You sound like some women they just had on the ITV News Channel. This and in fact many other rail crashes are due to things out of the control of the railways.

They've also just had RMT Union man Bob Crow on the phone who probably just wants to try and work out a way to link this accident into a reason to organise a strike
