CNN did cover the plane crash so that piece is incorrect. Would be nice if they do some fact checking. The transcripts are available on cnn's website. Wouldn't have taken a couple of minutes to check them and see there was effectively a newsflash within CNN's coverage about the plane crash

Did they do it on CNNI? I don't think it's that easily available in the US, so presumably that's what The Daily Show were watching

It was a joint simulcast and the update was in fact done by CNN US presenter Fredricka Whitfield. It was a very short update though but there was really no more info at that point.

Perhaps I'm being unduly cynical, but I have a feeling that a crash that killed "all 153 people aboard the plane and an undetermined number of people on the ground" (AP) would have received a lot more coverage if it happened in, say, France. Would the Jubilee still have been the lead story on CNNI? I wonder.

Licenced receivers can be relocated to public spaces where free admission is granted to members of the public. The premises, Churches, Church Halls, Village halls etc. to which they are relocated need not be licenced.

To be fair they didn't say CNN never mentioned the crash. Jon Stewart - "This is probably where CNN cuts away and we get pieces of taped flotilla re-caps as CNN goes wall-to-wall on that terrible tragedy."

I think the point was if you're going go wall-to-wall with 1 of 2 major international stories happening at the same time, why chose the pomp and circumstance of a flotilla, with fleeting mentions of a terrible plane crash, instead of the other way round?. I'm sure If the crash had been in an English speaking country it would've gotten much more prominence.

It's not often that simple, it can be harder to get both info and pictures from Nigeria than the readily available floatilla coverage. It's a matter of choice, does staying with the good pictures from London and mentioning the crash do the job better than just sitting there mumbling "reports, erm, unconfirmed, erm, whatnot".

Still, I've not fact checked fully so my entire post may be invalid.

The pictures from Nigeria were available on the news agencies pretty quickly on Sunday, there weren't many of them and they were pretty graphic though.

JCB is correct though, if that had happened in Europe or North America it would have got a lot more coverage... and that's always the case even when there's not a jubilee going on

Where do CNN stand on graphic coverage? Are they generally more squeamish than the BBC or Al Jazeera level?

Also note I never suggested he was wrong in saying it would be higher up if it was in Europe / North America, just that there were other factors.

And also - pedant from Dundee here - Nigeria is an English speaking country.

'The Daily Show With Jon Stewart' on CNN's coverage of the flotilla

I had no idea about the plane crash in Nigeria.

Lets face it that it probably wouldn't have had much coverage any other time of the year either other than a brief report considering the location.

I've actually no problem with it being overlooked in favour of something more joyous - 95% of the news is usually bad so why not let the good overshadow it for a change, and certainly from a British perspective the Jubilee is much more relevant - and I think the amazing turnout over the weekend means it's worthy of worldwide coverage to.

I'm with Pete on this one. Why deny international viewers the chance of seeing the Jubilee celebrations in order to show graphic images on a loop with little or no information just repeated ad nauseum? As horrific as the plane crash is, I bet there were far more people around the globe who'd rather watch the Jubilee, especially in Commonwealth countries. I thought the broadcasters made the right decision - roll with the Jubilee and inject some updates on the plane crash as information came through.

Can I just say how wonderful the ITV coverage is today? Miles ahead of the BBC's effort on Sunday. It's down to earth, but factually rich thanks to David Starkey without unnecessary 'features' at inappropriate times. In fact, the portions of the programme with Alastair, Mark, Mary, Nina and Natasha have been enjoyable and well-timed. A sterling effort by ITN today.

Absolutely and wholeheartedly agree. For the moments I've turned to the BBC they've been uninspiringly dull, whereas ITV1 has again pitched the tone exactly right - IMHO.
