They carried that news via a strap, and the news from Beijing this afternoon was pretty exceptional too. Plane crashes aren't a new thing, double record breaking gold winning feats are rare.
I agree - without going all Martin Lewis on you just because there is a bad news story around doesn't mean the good news story should be forgotten. For any other event perhaps, but regardless of what happens elsewhere in the world the Olympics are still happening and are incredibly newsworthy.

Can't say I agree with News 24 cutting away for a sports update from Beijing. During that useless update, it was confirmed that over 100 died.

I also agree. Considering they were with the story all afternoon, I think breaking away for a little while for another very important (hardly 'useless') event is sensible. Otherwise, you'd stay with the plane forever in case some new information is found which can't clash with the weather or something.

Being involved in the industry and having been specifically involved in the pioneering days of Spanair several years ago, I have naturally been channel hopping tonight between BBCW, CNNI, Sky and AJE.
I have to say the most balanced, accurate and factual coverage has come from CNNI's Aviation Correspondent, Richard Quest. He has been spot on the mark when it comes to facts. Not sensationalist, a la Sky.
Here is a link to the last active image of the stricken specific aircraft, taken just two days ago operating a flight to Malta.

I have to say, I'd prefer a lowercase ticker on BBC News and Sky News. It's easy to read and doesn't cause problems when it comes to acronyms and initialisms.
It was fully lower case though. Instead of "Plane crash in Madrid" it was "plane crash in madrid" IIRC. It just made it look like it was something from Good Housekeeping .

Not every capital no, but certainly in many capital cities. Correspondents are placed strategically so that there is a relatively even spread of correspondents and reporters across the world, with an element of emphasis on staffing up 'hotspots' like the Middle East. The BBC have also sometimes called upon Radio Journalists working for the BBC World Service and occasionally English-speaking journalists working for affiliate broadcasters. The BBC has a good working relationship with TVE (both organisations are part of the 'Big Five' members of Eurovision and, as anyone taking part in the Song Contest thread will know, Eurovision is about much more than the ESC - it will have no doubt facilitiated the exchange of the live pictures across the world today).
There are always going to be news stories happening a long way from a reporter though ... and that can even be on this little island of ours! Look how long it took for the Beeb to manage to get a TV crew to Weston super Mare for example. Breakfast relied on Radio Bristol's reporter on the phone for much (all?) of it's coverage!
