The police investigation into the disappearance of Madeleine McCann has almost reached its conclusion, Portugal's justice minister said on Wednesday.
Police say the search for Madeleine has almost reached an end
Alberto Costa told a parliamentary committee hearing in Lisbon that Portuguese police were "at a stage now where we are approaching the conclusion of the process."
I'm surprised this thread is still going strong. Right from the very start I've shied away from this story in the news, or from joining in this discussion, as I found it too upsetting to do so. There was an edition of Panorama about it last November (BBC1 19 Nov 2007 20:00 – 21:00), and it took me until Sunday 13 January this year, i.e. nearly two months after tranmission, to feel like watching it.
The McCanns now want a child alert system in Europe, similar to the Amber Alert System in the USA. It's a good idea, though I just hope they won't make them as shít scary as they are in the States.

Surely a babysitter would be a better solution, it's cheaper and doesn't cost the public a penny.

LOL.
Completely agree though. I suppose we're going to be saturated again with coverage with the one year anniversary coming up.

Your incisive wit and observational brilliance are unparallelled, Stuart. Fully concur with your comments.
On

East Midlands Today
, it was reported that Portguese detectives have flown over to Leicestershire to interview the McCanns' friends who were at the tapas bar. Kate and Gerry aren't very pleased that the Portuguese police are refusing to keep them in the loop.
So the case hasn't gone away just yet for us avid viewers; not least around my part of the world anyway.
