I imagine they're thinking "Madeline on the front cover sells an extra 50,000 copies...we must have a 'Maddie headline'"
It's sad but true. Just like Diana, there's an incremental rise in circulation with a front cover featuring the McCann case- the "journalists" at the Express are merely following the desires of their masters.

I've already wondered what the editors are smoking when they produce these obsessive headlines.

Surprisingly, I'm having trouble seeing him as a spokesman rather than a correspondent! I keep thinking what he's saying is going to be fair and balanced but then have to keep reminding myself that he's going to be biased!

And she's right. The programme completely refused to entertain any thought that the McCanns may themselves be involved and instead painted a picture of the Portuguese authorities (and possibly the Portuguese tourist industry) as wanting to cover their own backs and be spared the embarrassment of a possible child abduction. Indeed, Tonight relished telling us that one of the senior police officers involved in the McCann case - and a similar one a few years ago - was himself an "arguido".
Also, slightly off topic but:

Tonight With Trevor McDonald about the McCanns was one of the most biased pieces of investigative journalism I've ever seen. Regardless of their guilt or innocence, this programme should have offered a balanced overview of the evidence. It gave a very one-sided view.

I've just seen another advert for Torn on ITV. I am stunned ITV haven't postponed it due to similarities with the Maddie McCann case. Come on ITV, sort it out.

Why on earth should they postpone it. What effect is it possibly going to have. Obviously the McCann-Canns won't be watching it, but that's hardly a reason to subject the rest of the population to an unnecessary schedule change.
Maybe they should cancel the news - it might upset someone!

Didn't stop Channel 4 showing The Mark of Cain . I believe it was postponed, but it wasn't cancelled, and it documented something that had parallels with current events.
I truly wouldn't be surprised if the news was only allowed to report about the birth of lovely fluffy little lambs from now on, because anything else might upset some viewers.
EDIT : and the Obsess have gone pro-McCann again, using the word 'slur' again and complaining about the 'bungling' Portugese police:

This sort of blatantly biased programme could come back to haunt the Tonight producers, particularly depending upon how the investigation goes. It's a pity The Day Today isn't about to cover the story as they might have been less biased and seem more 'normal'.

News Knight with Trevor McDonald would relish covering this story from a more neutral point of view.
