Because people like to think that the story involves them, and it makes them look like good people.
People keep harking back to the death of Princess Diana as the cause of this mass hysteria, but I can't help but think it's the same people who donned their "Free The Weatherfield One" t-shirts when Deidre got put into jail in Corrie.

Those celebs wearing the yellow ribbons at the Soap Awards the other night made me cringe.

I'm a personal fan of the story about the idiot who lit a candle as a vigil to Madeline and ended up setting their house on fire.

TWO Southport mums are flying out to Morocco today to help search for missing toddler Madeleine McCann.....The two women had to use their own money for the trip because they were not registered with a charity but donations from individuals helped their cause.

Mum-of-two Eve decided to join the search after her four-year-old daughter Eleanor asked why she was not looking for Madeleine.
What would have happened if Elenor had come home from school and asked her Mum why she was not fighting in Iraq?
No, it's only a war going in Iraq where dozens of British soldiers have died.
Eleanor could ask her mother why her she isn't doing anything about the atrocities in Dafur, the Congo, Swaziland or Zimbabwe?
She could also ask her mother, why she isn't doing work for missing children's charities in the UK?

I hope Eleanor's Mum remembered to close and lock the window of her daughter's bedroom before she abandoned her for a pointless trip to Morocco
