Can I say how much I find many of these posts to be in incredibly poor taste. I take it not many of the people posting here have children of their own.

Whilst I accept that there is much to be discussed about the dominance of this story in the news bulletins (particularly on the continuous news channels) over the past few weeks, some of the comments here have gone way past this. Yes there is a valid discussion on the almost "Diana-like" way this story has been latched onto by both the media and the public.

BUT Can I just remind everyone that a little girl is missing - possibly abducted, possibly murdered. Her parents are doing absolutely everything they can to keep this story in the public eye - just as I would - as they believe (quite sensibly) thata very likely way a child abducted is going to be found is if absolutely everybody knows what she looks like - across Europe - and people continue to be made aware that she is missing.

That's an under-statement. I anticipate a "Jeremy Kyle-type" show on Sky with Team-McCann pouring their hearts out in the best US snivelling fashion.

I'm sure their media career will all fall apart when either one of the following happens:
Arrow It was found that Maddy never existed at all, and the pics are really a photo-shoot by an unknown child wannabe
Arrow She is found under the patio behind the apartment
Arrow Her Uncle/Grandad/Father is arrested and charged with murder
Arrow She is found in the UK and they simply forgot to take her on holiday
Arrow The parents are eventually charged with negligence

OK, you've made your point, but I think you're being unduly harsh here. Shocked

Well said Noggin. Very poor taste - commenting on the news coverage is one thing turning the story into the butt of sick jokes or comments is neither funny or clever.

And how does that justify meeting the Pope of all people. The parents should never have left the children alone, and when i watched the interview on Friday, it was like they didnt feel bad at what they done.

Also why are people made to feel like they have to join the consenceus (sp?) that when a child does missing the whole country must pray, pray for what. When i have children, if they ever did get abducted, god forbid that doesnt happen, i wouldnt want national coverage, in fact i dont think id be able to go on tv, id be too distraught. As for the parents, "You see these tears are real i'm crying, yes im crying" - Not in this case im afraid.

I dont think ive said anything distasteful, but i dont think everyday people are that bothered what goes on in the outside world, unless it affects them personally, then the majority dont really care. That said, i do feel sorry for Maddy, but life goes on im afriad.

Look, I think the main point being made here is the media's reaction and handling of the whole subject. It has gone too far for common sense approach now. We are in no way aiming jokes at the poor girl or any of her family but we are acting mainly on what we are getting from the media.

If my own child was missing I personally wouldn't want a large inflatable News of the World poster put up, and I certainly wouldn't feel the need to visit the Pope...or certainly there is no need for it to be publicised.

Another thing as people have already pointed out is what good is having a vigil in say... the middle of Timbuktu or the Shetland Isles going to do. ?

We are well aware their is a child missing and its desperately sad for her but you cannot be sucked into the media circus as it is quite frankly ridiculous. Rolling Eyes

From my understanding of events - The McCann's have been informed that the case of their missing daughter was likely to provoke such a media reaction (it is a 3 year old child, after all).

They are acting to attract the medias attention - knowing full well that with such heighten publicity there stands a greater chance of finding their daughter.

I do not think I am, or anyone here is, in a position to judge these parents who are obviously distraught and doing their best to return their daughter.

Sorry, but for me the comments mentioned seem extremely distasteful - a missing child (and their parents) should never be mocked, especially when you consider the child has likely been abducted and potentially murdered.

I think the point is the way the media have covered this story has made it a case for ridicule.

It may have got to the point when some of the posts, including my own, may seem to be in bad taste - but they are nothing compared to having your picture splashed across a giant inflatable mock up of the News of the World!

Or of course it could be that the majority of people who post on here ARE children. Laughing

Wise words from the Brekkie Boy - and whilst I have been banging on about this from the other side of the fence over the last few days I did cringe when I saw the inflatable News of the World.
